What are good faith-based phrases to help my child stay calm?

Parenting Perspective

Short and Gentle Phrases

Children with additional needs often feel overwhelmed by big emotions or new situations. Using simple, faith-based words can comfort their hearts and help them feel safe. Keep your phrases short and gentle, and repeat them calmly when your child is upset.

Simple, Reassuring Words

For example, saying, ‘Bismillah, we can do this together,’ can remind your child that they are not alone. If they feel scared, try saying, ‘Allah Almighty is with you. He sees you. He loves you.’ Use a soft, reassuring voice, sometimes your calm tone is as soothing as the words themselves.

Duas for Moments of Fear

Some parents like to teach their child a short Dua for moments of fear, such as, ‘Hasbiyallahu la ilaha illa Huwa…’ meaning ‘Allah is sufficient for me…’ For older children, gentle reminders like, ‘Take a deep breath and say SubhanAllah,’ can encourage them to pause and release some of their tension.

Before bed or during a meltdown, you could read Ayat-ul-Kursi or Surah Al Falaq aloud. The sound of Quranic recitation can feel deeply calming for many children. Use these phrases and practices often so they become familiar and comforting over time.

The Power of Calm Presence

Remember, you do not have to fix every meltdown. Sometimes just sitting close by, repeating a calming faith-based phrase and breathing slowly together is enough to help your child feel safe again. Your calm presence, rooted in faith, is one of the greatest gifts you can give.

Spiritual Insight

Islam teaches us that remembering Allah Almighty (Dhikr) brings ease to our hearts and minds, no matter our age. Teaching your child simple, loving words that connect them to Allah Almighty can build resilience and hope during stressful moments.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Ar-Ra’d (13), Verse 28:

Verily, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest. ‘

This Ayah reminds us that even a small phrase can bring calm when emotions feel too big.

It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 3862, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stated:

The Dua of the parent for his child will be answered.

This Hadith Shareef reassures you that every whispered prayer, and every faith-based phrase you speak over your child, is heard by Allah Almighty. Make sincere Dua for your words to sink gently into your child’s heart and for their fear or anger to soften. Trust that your calm reminders of Allah Almighty’s love and protection become anchors for your child’s emotional world. May your words, your patience, and your faith bring Sabr and Barakah to your home, and may they help your child feel wrapped in the mercy of the One who is always nearby.
