Parenting Perspective
Children often move quickly and impulsively, which is natural for their energy levels. Yet posture training and balance benefit from learning slow, deliberate control. Activities that combine slowness with awareness help children notice how their muscles and joints work, teaching them to move with intention rather than rushing. This not only improves posture but also strengthens emotional regulation.
Begin with simple, playful activities that slow movements down. For example, invite your child to walk across a room as slowly as possible without stopping, counting each step aloud together. Another exercise could be ‘slow-motion animals,” pretending to be a sloth, turtle, or snail, exaggerating movements to practise control. These playful tasks train balance and concentration while making awareness fun.
Activities That Encourage Slow Control
- Slow-motion walking: heel-to-toe walking across a line, focusing on steady steps.
- Ball balance: carefully passing a ball from hand to hand or foot to foot without dropping it.
- Yoga stretches: child-friendly poses like ‘tree’ or ‘cat-cow’ held with calm breathing.
- Tai chi–inspired flow: moving arms in circles slowly, focusing on smoothness and control.
Parents can support awareness by asking reflective questions during these activities: ‘Which muscles are working right now?’ or, ‘How steady do your feet feel?’ Encourage your child to describe sensations, whether heavy, light, strong, or wobbly. This builds vocabulary for body awareness while reinforcing patience.
To keep motivation high, set small, achievable challenges. For instance, balancing in one position for ten seconds, then fifteen, and celebrating progress along the way. Always end on a positive note so the child remembers success rather than frustration. Most importantly, keep the atmosphere calm and playful, avoiding constant correction. The aim is for children to enjoy discovering control rather than fearing mistakes.
Over time, these activities teach children that slowing down allows them to connect with their bodies more deeply. This awareness will help not only posture but also emotional calmness, patience, and resilience in daily life.
Spiritual Insight
Islam values balance, patience, and mindfulness. Activities that build slow control reflect these values by teaching children to move with awareness and dignity. Parents who encourage calm, deliberate movement are helping their children practise a form of discipline that benefits both body and soul.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Furqan (25), Verse 63:
‘And the servants of the Most Merciful are those who walk upon the earth gently, and when the ignorant address them [harshly], they say words of peace.’
This reminds us that gentle, deliberate actions are marks of strength and humility, qualities parents can nurture through mindful activities.
It is recorded in Jami Tirmidhi, Hadith 2012, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Calmness and deliberation are from Allah, while haste is from Shaytaan.’
This teaches us that slowing down and moving with intention are qualities loved by Allah Almighty.
By guiding children in activities that combine slow control and awareness, parents nurture patience, discipline, and gratitude. These practices strengthen posture while also teaching children to value gentleness, calmness, and presence, lessons that will serve them in body, character, and faith throughout life.
