How to Celebrate Small Wins to Stay Motivated as a Parent
Parenting Perspective
Parenting is a long journey, and it is normal to feel drained when progress feels slow. We often focus so heavily on long-term goals that small daily victories go unnoticed. Celebrating these small wins, such as a chore completed without argument or a moment of patience, can replenish your motivation.1 It helps you see incremental progress and prevents frustration from building up.
Recognise and Name Achievements
Take a moment each day to identify small successes. You might say aloud, ‘I am proud that we stayed calm during homework today’. Naming these moments reinforces that growth is a process and encourages a focus on progress, not perfection. This practice nurtures mindfulness and gratitude, building your own patience and resilience.
Embed Small Rewards
Pair recognition with tiny, meaningful rewards for yourself. This could be a short break with a cup of tea or a moment to journal about what went well. These small personal rewards allow you to pause and appreciate your own effort, which strengthens your internal motivation. This model for your child that perseverance itself is valuable.
Share Wins with Your Child
When appropriate, share these small victories with your child to build your connection. For instance, ‘I noticed how you waited your turn today. It made our day much smoother and helped me feel calm, thank you’. This not only validates your own feelings but also nurtures your child’s self-esteem and cooperation.3
Spiritual Insight
Islam encourages gratitude (shukr) and the recognition of progress, however small, as a way to maintain patience and motivation.4 Acknowledging minor achievements aligns with the core principle of valuing sincere effort and intention.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verses 286:
‘ Allah (Almighty) does not place any burden on any human being except that which is within his capacity…’
This verse reminds us that the challenges we face are within our capacity to handle. Every small step forward, therefore, is a meaningful achievement. Acknowledging these small wins honours the effort you are putting in.
It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 1, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Actions are judged by intentions, and every person will get what they intended.’5
This foundational hadith teaches that our sincere intention and consistent effort are what truly matter. By celebrating the small wins that result from this effort, you are valuing the intention behind the action. These moments of recognition keep you motivated and emotionally resilient, reminding you that your steady guidance is precious in the sight of Allah.
