How often should I read aloud to develop my child’s speech?

Parenting Perspective

Short, Daily Sessions Are Best

Reading aloud is one of the most powerful ways to build your child’s vocabulary, understanding, and love for language.1 There is no strict rule for how often you should do it, but the more regularly you read, the better. Short, daily reading sessions are often more effective than one long story a week. Even ten or fifteen minutes before bed can make a significant difference over time.2

For toddlers and young children, repetition is key. They love hearing the same story repeatedly because each retelling helps them to recognise sounds, new words, and sentence patterns.3 Try to make it a cosy, screen-free time when your child feels safe to listen and join in. Encourage them to point to pictures, repeat funny phrases, or guess what might happen next. Keep your tone warm and unhurried. Remember, the goal is not just to finish the book but to help your child enjoy the rhythm of language. These daily moments of reading together help your child to feel calm, connected, and confident to use new words in their everyday conversations.

Spiritual Insight

An Act of Worship

In Islam, teaching and learning are acts of worship when done with sincere intention. Reading aloud to your child is not just about the words on a page; it is a way to strengthen trust, pass down stories that shape their understanding of the world, and nurture a love for beneficial knowledge.4 Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Yunus (10), Verse 57:

‘O mankind, indeed, you have been granted enlightened direction from your Sustainer, and a cure for your hearts (‘Sadr’ is used to depict the spiritual gateway of the body which is around the heart but not the heart itself), and guidance and mercy for the believers.’5

Just as the noble Quran heals and guides hearts, stories that are kind, meaningful, and truthful help to shape your child’s speech and character.

The Power of Consistent, Small Efforts

The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ often shared stories, examples, and parables to teach lessons in ways people could remember. It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 4856, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘Convey from me, even if it is one verse.’

This reminds us that consistent small efforts are better than overwhelming large ones. A few minutes of reading each day, filled with warmth and reflection, can plant seeds of wisdom and language that will last a lifetime. May every story you share help your child’s tongue grow fluent in good, truthful words and deepen your bond as you sit together remembering Allah Almighty’s blessings.
