How does a teen handle the thought they must check an influencer to prevent luck?

Parenting Perspective

Managing the thought that a specific digital action is required to prevent bad luck is a common struggle for teenagers today. This behaviour occurs when a teen believes that checking an influencer will influence their future success or safety. Such thoughts create a cycle of anxiety that the teenager attempts to resolve through repetitive actions. Parents can support their child by first acknowledging that these fears feel real even if they are not logical.

Understanding Digital Magical Thinking

Magical thinking involves the belief that internal thoughts or minor digital actions can control external reality. For example, a student can feel that if they do not view the latest story of an influencer, they will fail an upcoming exam. This is a burden that technology amplifies because social media is always available. Parents should explain that luck is not something that can be manipulated by a screen. It is helpful to discuss how algorithms work to show that influencers are just people and their content has no power over a life. By bringing awareness to these patterns, the teenager can begin to separate their digital choices from their personal well-being.

Practical Steps for Breaking Habits

To help a teen break the loop of checking, parents can suggest a gradual delay in the response to the urge. If the teen feels they must check a profile immediately, they can try waiting for five minutes. This delay teaches the brain that the feared catastrophe does not happen even if the compulsion is not satisfied. Parents can also encourage the teen to turn off notifications for specific accounts that trigger these thoughts. Replacing the digital ritual with a grounding real-world action helps the teen reclaim their time and mental energy. Consistent support is essential for long term progress and building the resilience needed to manage the pressures of the digital world.

Spiritual Insight

Beyond strategies and conversations, there lies the deeper nourishment that faith offers. Noble Quran and traditions of holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ remind us that raising children is about nurturing hearts that remember Allah Almighty. While technology can create loops of anxiety, faith provides a foundation for the soul to find peace. Faith is essential.

Allah Almighty states in noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 286:

‘Allah Almighty does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear.’

This reminds us that the internal struggles a teenager faces are within our capacity to overcome when we seek help.

It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 1, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘The reward of deeds depends upon the intentions, and every person will get the reward according to what he has intended.’

This teaches us that intentionality is the key to self-discipline and spiritual growth in our lives.

Helping a teenager navigate deep fears requires consistent guidance and a calm environment. By providing practical tools and a spiritual framework, parents ensure their children remain grounded and peaceful. Focus remains on building resilience and helping the teenager understand that their value is found in their character. Through open communication and steady support, we help our children navigate the digital world with a sense of self rooted in their faith and their values. This journey requires patience from every family member to ensure lasting peace and emotional stability. By focusing on steady progress, we always ensure our children grow.
