Parenting Perspective
Navigating the school environment in 2026 involves a high degree of social awareness, especially for a student struggling with ‘unlucky’ corridors. This form of avoidance is often rooted in magical thinking, where the brain links a hallway to a potential disaster. For a student, the pressure to ‘fit in’ is immense, and taking a detour can lead to social isolation or unwanted questions. Parents must validate the anxiety while helping the student recognize that safety and belonging can be balanced through gradual steps and a clear sense of identity today and always. It is a journey of courage.
The Strategy of ‘Social Camouflage’
When the urge to avoid a corridor is too strong to ignore, a student can use ‘social camouflage’. This involves finding a logical, social reason to take a different route. For example, a student might say, ‘I need to check something at my locker.’ This allows the student to satisfy the compulsion without drawing attention to the avoidance. However, parents should encourage this only as a temporary bridge while they work on building the internal strength to eventually face the ‘unlucky’ hallway and reclaim their school life. This method protects their social standing while they grow.
Gradual Exposure with a ‘Safety Anchor’
Building resilience requires the student to slowly challenge the ‘unluckiness’ of the corridor. A helpful technique is walking through the hallway with a ‘safety anchor’—a trusted friend who knows about the struggle. By walking through the area while engaged in conversation, the brain receives evidence that nothing bad happened. Parents can praise these small victories, emphasizing that bravery is not the absence of fear, but the choice to move forward despite it. This gradual exposure helps the student reclaim their freedom within the school building today.
Spiritual Insight
Beyond strategies, faith offers the ultimate nourishment for the heart. Noble Quran and traditions of holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ remind us that our safety is entirely in the hands of Allah Almighty, and ‘bad luck’ has no power over the destiny He has written for us.
Allah Almighty states in noble Quran at Surah At-Tawbah (9), Verse 51:
‘Say, never will we be struck except by what Allah Almighty has decreed for us; He is our protector.’
This Verse provides a spiritual shield. It teaches the student that a hallway cannot cause harm, as only Allah Almighty is the protector. This realization shifts the focus from ‘unlucky’ spaces to a secure relationship with the Creator.
It is recorded in Jami Tirmidhi, Hadith 2516, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ told a young companion:
‘Know that if the whole world were to gather together to benefit you, it would benefit you only with something Allah Almighty prescribed.’
This teaches us that no location or ‘bad omen’ can change what Allah Almighty has decreed. Steady guidance helps students navigate these fears. By providing a spiritual framework, parents ensure their children remain grounded in the love of Allah Almighty. Through open communication, we help children navigate the world with a sense of self rooted in faith and values. This balanced approach ensures they grow with a strong heart, finding peace in every corner of their school today.
