Parenting Perspective
Managing the compulsive urge to check a bag for a bus pass twenty times is a significant emotional challenge for a student. This behaviour often indicates a deep-seated fear of being stranded or facing a social crisis if the pass is lost. For the student, the act of checking provides a fleeting sense of relief, but it quickly gives way to a fresh wave of doubt, creating a repetitive loop that consumes time and energy. Parents can help by acknowledging that this feeling of uncertainty is significant. It is important to validate the physical tension the child feels without dismissing the action as mere forgetfulness. By providing support, parents’ guide their children toward a more flexible way of interacting with their belongings and their daily environment.
Establishing a Physical Safe Spot
One powerful strategy involves creating a designated, high-visibility spot for the bus pass within the bag. If the pass is kept in a transparent pocket or attached to a retractable lanyard, the student can verify its presence with a single glance rather than a frantic search. Parents can suggest a ‘once and done’ rule where the child checks the pass when they leave the house and then zip the pocket shut. This physical barrier acts as a symbolic closure for the task. By shifting the focus from the act of searching to the act of securing, the child begins to break the association between anxiety and repetitive checking. It is helpful to discuss how it feels to trust that the pass remains where it was placed.
Building Trust in Personal Competence
Fostering resilience involves teaching the student to trust their own memory and competence. Parents can encourage the child to practice sitting with the ‘uncertainty’ for short periods. If the urge to check arises, the student can try to wait for two minutes before opening their bag. This gradual exposure helps the student realise that the feeling of doubt is just a sensation and does not mean the pass is actually gone. By modelling a relaxed attitude toward minor daily logistics, parents show that life remains stable even in moments of doubt. Through patience and consistent guidance, the student is likely to develop the tools needed to manage their compulsions effectively and find peace in their daily commute.
Spiritual Insight
Beyond strategies and conversations, faith offers deeper nourishment for the heart. Noble Quran and traditions of holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ remind us that raising children is about nurturing hearts that remember Allah Almighty. While the world can create loops of worry, faith provides a foundation for the soul to find stillness and true reliance on the Creator.
Allah Almighty states in noble Quran at Surah at Talaq (65), Verse 3:
‘And whoever relies upon Allah Almighty, then He is sufficient for him. Indeed, Allah Almighty will accomplish His purpose.’
This reminds us that ultimate security comes from our trust in Allah Almighty. When a student feels plagued by the doubt of having lost an item, they can find comfort in knowing that their affairs are in the hands of the Best of Providers.
It is recorded in Jami Tirmidhi, Hadith 2517, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stated:
‘Leave what makes you in doubt for what does not make you in doubt.’
This teaches us the importance of moving forward with certainty once a task has been completed. When a student has placed their pass in their bag, they are encouraged to leave the doubt behind and focus on the present moment. By teaching children to seek help from Allah Almighty, we help them align their actions with a higher purpose.
Helping a student navigate the pressure of repetitive checking requires consistent guidance and a calm environment. By providing practical tools and a spiritual framework, parents ensure their children remain grounded and peaceful. Focus remains on building resilience and helping the child understand that their value is found in their character. Through open communication and steady support, we help our children navigate the world with a sense of self rooted in their faith and their own unique personal values. This balanced approach ensures they grow with a strong heart as they face daily challenges.
