How do I use car journeys for language practice instead of screens?

Parenting Perspective

An Adventure of Words and Connection

Car journeys are a golden opportunity to grow your child’s language skills without relying on screens. Instead of handing over a tablet to keep them quiet, you can try turning the journey into an adventure of words and connection. Simple games like ‘I spy’ build vocabulary as your child learns to name colours, shapes, and objects around them. Singing nursery rhymes or repeating short poems strengthens their memory and pronunciation.

You can also talk about where you are going, what you see on the road, or share stories from your own childhood. If your child is learning more than one language, use the time to practise familiar phrases in both. Keep the tone light and joyful; your calm voice and attention will make the trip feel special. For longer trips, pack a small bag with favourite books and talk about the pictures together. A quiet car ride filled with shared words and laughter can stay in a child’s memory for far longer than a passive video.

Spiritual Insight

Precious Teaching Moments

In Islam, every moment spent with your child can be an act of worship if it is done with love and sincerity. Car journeys remind us that even daily routines can become precious teaching moments. Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Luqman (31), Verse 13:

‘And when (Prophet) Luqman (AS) said to his son, whilst he was offering him enlightened direction: “O my son, do not ascribe to anything (which amounts to icon worshipping paganism), instead of (worshipping) Allah (Almighty) ; indeed, this kind of icon worshipping paganism is the worst form of darkness (of ignorance and immorality).”’

This verse shows the beauty of gentle, wise words shared between a parent and child during simple moments of togetherness.

A Sacred Duty

It is recorded in Jami Tirmidhi, Hadith 1705, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stated:

‘Every one of you is a shepherd and every one of you is responsible for his flock.’

This Hadith Shareef reminds us that guiding children with kindness is our duty wherever we are, even in the car. Replacing screens with real conversation keeps your child’s heart close to yours. Talking about the signs of Allah Almighty you see on the road, the sky, the trees, or the rain, turns an ordinary drive into a moment of gratitude and reflection.
