How do I teach respect for teachers and other adults?

Parenting Perspective

Model Respectful Behaviour

Teaching respect for teachers and other adults is crucial for helping your child to develop strong interpersonal skills and a sense of responsibility. You can start by modelling respectful behaviour in your own interactions with adults. Children learn a great deal by observing how their parents behave, so make sure to demonstrate kindness, politeness, and gratitude when interacting with teachers, relatives, or strangers. For example, when you speak to your child’s teacher, do so with respect, and show your appreciation for their role in your child’s education.

Explain Why Respect is Important

It is also important to explain to your child why teachers and other adults deserve respect. Teach them that these adults are responsible for guiding, educating, and nurturing them, and that respect is an essential part of that relationship. You might say, ‘Your teacher works hard to help you learn and grow. Showing them respect helps you to build a positive relationship.’ This reinforces the idea that respect is not just about following rules, but also about valuing others for their experience, knowledge, and efforts.

Address Disrespect Calmly

If your child displays disrespectful behaviour towards adults, address it calmly. Ask them why they behaved that way and help them to understand the consequences of their actions. For example, ‘When you speak rudely to your teacher, it makes it difficult for them to help you. How do you think your teacher feels when that happens?’ Encourage your child to apologise and remind them of the importance of showing respect, regardless of their emotions or frustrations.

Spiritual Insight

In Islam, respect for others, especially for adults, is highly valued. Allah Almighty encourages us to treat others with respect and kindness in the noble Quran. Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Nisa (4), Verse 59:

‘O you who are Believers, obey Allah Almighty and obey His Messenger (Prophet Muhammad ) and those who have authority amongst you…’

This verse teaches that respecting those in positions of authority, including teachers, is an important aspect of being a responsible and obedient believer.

The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also emphasised the importance of respecting adults, particularly those who guide and teach us. It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 3587, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘The best of you are those who are the best to their families.’

This Hadith highlights the value of showing respect to those who play a nurturing and guiding role in our lives. By teaching your child to respect teachers and other adults, you are not only helping them to build positive relationships but also to align their behaviour with the teachings of Islam.
