Parenting Perspective
Children often feel exposed and self-conscious when adults comment on their bodies, even casually. Beneath their laughter or awkward smiles, they may experience anxiety, shame, or confusion about their self-worth. This emotional vulnerability makes it essential for parents to act as both a shield and a guide, teaching children that their value is not tied to size or appearance.
Proactive Strategies for Protection
- Anticipate and Prepare: Before family gatherings, prepare your child with simple, empowering language. You might say, ‘Some people may comment on how we look, but we know our bodies are healthy and strong.’ This frames the situation proactively and reassures them that their identity is secure.
- Gentle but Firm Redirection: When a guest makes a comment, respond calmly and firmly without shaming anyone. You could say, ‘We try not to focus on sizes; every child grows differently.’ This models respectful boundaries while maintaining social grace. Parent scripts are able to be integrated naturally: ‘Thank you for caring, but we prefer to talk about activities or achievements rather than bodies.’
- Model Boundary Setting: Children learn boundaries by observing their parents. Consistently demonstrate calm, assertive ways to redirect attention or change topics when discussions about appearance arise. Over time, this not only shields the child but gradually shapes the family culture to be more respectful of all children’s bodies.
- Reinforce Positive Self-Talk: After the interaction, guide your child in reflecting on their strengths and the functions of their body rather than appearance. For instance, you might comment, ‘I love how your legs carry you so quickly across the yard’ or ‘Your hands make such beautiful art.’
Spiritual Insight
Islam teaches that every individual is created with unique attributes and that respect for Allah Almighty’s gifts includes honouring the bodies of children. Protecting children from harmful comments aligns with nurturing their dignity and trust in Allah’s wisdom.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Isra (17), Verse 70:
‘And We have certainly honoured the children of Adam and carried them on the land and sea and provided for them of the good things and preferred them over much of what We have created, with [definite] preference…’
This verse reminds us that all humans, including children, are inherently honoured and valued by Allah Almighty. Their physical differences are part of that divine wisdom, and protecting their dignity is a form of respecting His creation.
It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 3672, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him honour his neighbour; and whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him honour his guest; and whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him speak good or remain silent.’
This Hadith underscores the responsibility of adults to speak with care, especially around children. By politely redirecting comments, you demonstrate respect for your child’s dignity while modelling manners and ethical speech, teaching them that their value is not subject to commentary.
By preparing your child, calmly redirecting guests, reinforcing positive self-talk, and modelling boundaries, you create a protective and respectful environment. Children learn to value themselves for their abilities and character, not for the size of their bodies, and witness a practical example of honouring Allah Almighty’s creation in everyday life.
