How Do I Stay Calm When Others Feed Them Unsafe Food Out of Ignorance?

Parenting Perspective

Few moments invoke a greater sense of helplessness than watching someone unknowingly give your child unsafe food. While your instinct may be overwhelming anger or fear, calm management protects your child far more effectively than an emotional reaction. By staying collected and educating gently, you transform what could have been a painful moment into a lasting teaching of grace—showing your child that even when people err, true believers respond with wisdom, compassion, and steadfast faith in Allah Almighty’s comprehensive protection.

Prioritising Safety and Emotional Control

You must take a deep breath before speaking. Your immediate focus must be on safety first—remove the food gently, check immediately for any adverse symptoms, and reassuringly tell your child that you have the situation completely under control. Once the immediate moment has passed, you must shift your mindset from blame to education

Most people who make such mistakes act out of genuine misunderstanding, not malice. Later, when everyone’s emotions have settled, explain the gravity of the situation kindly: ‘I know you meant well, but this food can cause them serious harm. It is not a preference; it is a medical and spiritual responsibility for us.’ This measured approach preserves valuable relationships and ensures the focus remains entirely on protecting the child, not criticising the other person.

Modelling Composure Under Stress

At home, process the incident with your child in a collected manner. Say: ‘That was a mistake, but Allah gives us strength to handle it wisely. You did nothing wrong.’ This critical step restores their sense of security and models composure under intense stress. Repeated exposure to your calm crisis-handling teaches them self-trust. You are not merely managing a single incident—you are actively shaping their lifelong emotional response to mistakes, fear, and social misunderstanding.

Spiritual Insight

The Islamic spiritual tradition teaches that mastery over one’s anger and the practice of clemency are among the highest forms of ihsan (excellence), especially when managing the unintentional errors of others.

The Quran reminds parents that genuine strength is demonstrated not by force, but by the ability to restrain one’s temper and forgive human error.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Aal Imran (3), Verse 134:

‘Those who spend [in the cause of Allah] in prosperity and adversity, who restrain anger and pardon people—and Allah loves those who do good…’

This verse reminds parents that real strength lies in restraint. Your immediate calmness in the face of others’ ignorance reflects ihsan (excellence in conduct). Responding with dignity and patience, even when someone unintentionally endangers your child, is a profound act of worship—because it mirrors the immense mercy Allah Almighty shows towards human error and ignorance.

The Prophet’s Hadith clearly defines true strength as the ability to control the most powerful human emotion: anger.

It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 6114, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘The strong is not the one who overcomes the people by his strength, but the strong is the one who controls himself while in a state of anger.’

Your child learns through your powerful example that strength is not loudness or aggression but composure. Each time you successfully respond with patience rather than rage, you firmly plant in them the essential seeds of emotional intelligence and trust in divine justice.

By staying collected and educating gently, you transform what could have been a painful moment into a lasting teaching of grace—showing your child that even when people err, true believers respond with wisdom, compassion, and steadfast faith in Allah Almighty’s comprehensive protection.
