How do I show that seeking Allah’s pleasure matters more than trends?

Parenting Perspective

Children naturally want to belong. Trends in clothing, gadgets, or social behaviours seem to promise instant acceptance and admiration. The emotional core behind this is the desire for social approval. Parents must help children see that real safety and lasting satisfaction come from pleasing Allah Almighty, because His approval does not fade with changing fashions. Teaching this early anchors children’s identity in values rather than in shifting peer standards.

Re-anchoring Approval

Begin by highlighting the transient nature of popularity and social approval. Explain, “People’s likes change each month. What is praised today may be forgotten tomorrow. Allah’s pleasure, however, rewards you forever.” Illustrate this with real-life choices: choosing modest dress instead of flashy clothing, speaking politely instead of adopting sarcastic humour, or showing patience when peers rush to emulate the latest fad. When children see the tangible trade-off between temporary attention and enduring divine reward, they begin to understand that values, not trends, are their true compass.

Asking the Higher Question

Introduce a simple checkpoint before joining a trend: “Does this bring me closer to Allah Almighty, or take me away from Him?” Repeating this question trains children to pause and reflect on the spiritual impact of their choices. It also reduces the power of peer pressure by giving children a principle-based reason for saying no, beyond the usual “Mum said no.” Over time, this habit fosters a God-centered mindset where decision-making is rooted in faith rather than in fleeting social validation.

Celebrating Principled Choices

When children resist trends that conflict with values, reinforce their courage and insight. Say, “You chose Allah’s smile over likes. That is real strength.” Recognizing these moments builds confidence and shows that principled decisions carry intrinsic reward. Children learn to take pride in making choices that align with enduring approval rather than ephemeral popularity. Parents can model this by also explaining their own decisions in light of pleasing Allah Almighty, making the abstract tangible through daily examples.

Micro-action

Practical routines reinforce this lesson. Introduce Trend Reflection Moments before outings or social events; discuss possible trends and ask, “Which of these brings us closer to Allah Almighty?” When your child declines a trend, use Praise Principle Over Popularity by highlighting the inner reward: “You prioritized values over attention. That is lasting honour.” Finally, use Role-Modelling by sharing instances from your own life where choosing Allah’s pleasure led to a deeper sense of contentment and confidence than following fleeting trends.

Spiritual Insight

The noble Quran identifies divine approval (Ridwan) as the highest and most enduring form of attainment, surpassing all worldly gains.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah At-Tawbah (9), Verse 72:

‘But the approval of Allah is greater. That is the great attainment…’

This verse emphasizes that Allah’s pleasure surpasses every worldly gain, including fleeting social recognition or fashionable status.

The Hadith literature reinforces this principle, linking Allah’s approval to eternal joy:

It is recorded in Riyadh Al-Saliheen, Hadith 1894, that the Holy Prophet Muhammad  said:

‘Allah will say to the people of Paradise… I shall bestow My pleasure upon you and I shall never be displeased with you.’

The reward of Allah’s ridwan offers permanence, honour, and spiritual safety, unlike trends, which offer only temporary attention and validation. By helping children consistently check choices against Allah’s pleasure, parents teach them to root identity in faith rather than in peer approval, creating a form of belonging that is unshakable and stable.
