How do I show that Allah Almighty provides what is best, not just what we want?

Parenting Perspective

It is a deeply spiritual challenge to help your child reconcile their immediate desires with the reality of Rizq (Divine provision). When a child is disappointed because a specific prayer seems unanswered or a desired item is withheld, they might conclude that Allah Almighty did not hear them or that their desires were not worthy. Your compassionate task is to anchor their heart in the certainty of (Divine Wisdom) Al-Hakeem, showing them that the provision they receive, including the things they are denied, is precisely what is best for their overall well-being and eternal success.

The fundamental shift you must implement is moving the focus from ‘what I want’ to ‘what I truly need.’

The Routine of Reflection on Denial

Create routines that transform moments of denial or disappointment into lessons in superior foresight. Denial, when viewed correctly, becomes a form of provision, a protection from harm the child could not foresee.

  • Looking Back for Hidden Good: When a request is denied, or a desire is missed, gently revisit that moment months later when the outcome is clear. You might recall: ‘Do you remember how much you wanted that toy, but we did not get it? Well, later we realised that the toy was easily broken, or that the money we saved allowed us to help a family member when they truly needed it. Allah Almighty, the All-Wise, knew the consequence of that provision, and protected us from waste or disappointment.’ This routine trains their mind to see delay or denial as an act of merciful stewardship.
  • The Unseen Provision Analogy: Use the simple analogy of medicine. You might say: ‘Sometimes, the doctor gives you medicine that tastes bitter, and you desperately want a sweet. But your parent, who sees the larger picture, knows the bitter medicine is what you need to become truly healthy. Allah Almighty is the Ultimate Healer; He gives us the provision of necessity for our soul, even if our heart desires the sweetness of the dunya.’ This helps them understand that true provision cures, rather than simply pleases.

Defining Needs versus Wants

Consciously use language that distinguishes between essential needs and non-essential wants, ensuring that the highest value is always placed on the essentials provided by Allah Almighty.

  • Priceless Needs: Emphasise the basic provisions that are always given: air, health, family, faith, and safety. Say: ‘Allah Almighty always provides our needs, health, safety, and a roof over our heads. Those are the most important gifts, the ones we cannot live without. Our wants are the accessories of life, which Allah Almighty gives or withholds based on His perfect plan for our growth.’
  • Trusting the Plan: When they are disappointed, encourage them to verbalise their acceptance, transforming their frustration into Tawakkul. They might say: ‘I wanted that very much, but I trust Allah Almighty’s wisdom is better than my desire.’ This practice replaces the feeling of rejection with a feeling of deep security in the Divine plan.

Spiritual Insight

The ability to accept that Allah Almighty provides what is best, not just what is desired, is the hallmark of true faith. It stems from the recognition of Allah Almighty’s Names, primarily Al-Hakeem (The All-Wise) and Al-Aleem (The All-Knowing). Since Allah Almighty knows the future and the true consequences of every blessing or denial, His provision is inherently perfect. This acceptance of Divine choice is crucial for protecting the believer’s heart from the destruction of envy and discontentment.

The noble Quran establishes that human dislike or desire does not determine the true value or suitability of a provision.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al-Baqarah (2), Verse 216:

‘But perhaps you hate a thing, and it is good for you; and perhaps you love a thing and it is bad for you. And Allah Almighty Knows, while you know not.’

This verse is the cornerstone of accepting Divine wisdom. You can explain to your child that their human knowledge is extremely limited. We only see the present moment and our immediate feelings, but Allah Almighty sees the entire chain of consequences. This verse directly addresses the feelings of disappointment and desire, urging the heart to submit to the certainty that what we dislike (denial, delay, difficulty) may contain immense goodness, and what we love (immediate fulfilment) may contain great harm. This wisdom compels us to trust His comprehensive knowledge over our narrow perspective.

Holy Prophet Muhammad  taught us that the choice Allah Almighty makes for the believer is always superior to the believer’s own choice, and that true provision is what benefits the believer’s faith.

It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2999, that holy Prophet Muhammad  said:

‘How wonderful is the affair of the believer, for all his affairs are good. If something good happens to him, he is grateful, and that is good for him. If something bad happens to him, he is patient, and that is good for him.’

This Hadith confirms that the believer, regardless of whether their desire is met or denied, always receives the best provision. You can explain to your child that if they receive what they want, they gain the provision of gratitude and reward. If they are denied or face difficulty, they gain the provision of patience and reward. Holy Prophet Muhammad  teaches that the believer’s spiritual outcome is always positive because their response transforms the circumstance. This understanding frees the heart from disappointment and anchors hope in the knowledge that every event is perfectly measured for their spiritual success.

You can teach your child that Allah Almighty provides what is best, not merely what is desired, by helping them distinguish between needs and wants and reflect on moments of denial as forms of protection and guidance. Use routines that highlight the hidden good in what is withheld, showing that Allah Almighty, the All-Wise, ensures their well-being even when their heart desires something else. Emphasize the essentials Allah Almighty always provides, such as health, safety, family, faith, and shelter, and encourage them to express Tawakkul by accepting that Allah Almighty’s wisdom surpasses human desire. The noble Quran teaches that what we dislike may be good for us, and what we love may contain harm, illustrating that Divine provision is always perfect. Holy Prophet Muhammad  affirmed that all circumstances are beneficial for the believer, whether they bring ease or difficulty, as gratitude and patience transform every event into lasting reward. By internalizing these lessons, your child learns to trust Allah Almighty’s choice, cultivating contentment, hope, and spiritual maturity.
