How do I show my child the joy of offering the best to others?

Parenting Perspective

Teaching a child to find joy in offering the best of what they have is not an instruction to be delivered, but an inspiration to be shared. Children develop a generous spirit not by being told to give, but by witnessing the profound contentment and happiness that giving brings to the people they admire most. Your role is to model this joy so authentically that they are drawn to it themselves.

Inspire Through Your Own Example

Let your child see you consistently and cheerfully choosing the best for others. When guests visit, let them observe you preparing the freshest fruit, using the nicest plates, or offering the most comfortable seat. Narrate your actions with a quiet sincerity: ‘We always want to offer our guests the best that we have. This is how we show our love and honour them, and it is an act that is beloved to Allah’. Your own visible lack of hesitation and the genuine smile with which you give will be their most powerful lesson. They learn that generosity is a happy practice, not a reluctant duty.

Involve Them in the Act of Choosing

Actively involve your child in the process of giving. When preparing a gift for a friend or a plate of food for a neighbour, turn it into a shared activity. Ask for their opinion: ‘Which of these toys do you think our friend would love the most?’ or ‘Let us pick the very best dates to send to our neighbours’. When they participate in selecting something of value to give away, they become active agents of generosity. Be sure to praise the quality of their choice and the emotion behind it: ‘That was a beautiful and thoughtful selection. You chose it from your heart, and that is what matters most’.

Spiritual Insight

Islam reframes the act of giving not as a depletion of one’s resources, but as a profound investment and a way of participating in a divine attribute. When we give the best of what we have, we are reflecting the nature of Allah Himself, Al-Karim (The Most Generous), and acting as a conduit for His blessings in the world. This is the source of the deepest and most enduring joy.

The Quran uses a powerful agricultural metaphor to illustrate the immense, multiplying returns that come from giving for the sake of Allah.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 261:

‘The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills…’

This verse is the ultimate response to the fear that giving leads to loss. You can explain this beautiful imagery to your child: ‘When you give one good thing for Allah’s sake, He does not just replace it with one. He makes it grow like a seed, multiplying it hundreds of times over in ways we cannot even imagine’. This teaches them that generosity is the wisest investment, yielding returns of joy, blessings, and divine reward that far exceed what was given.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught that the path to earning Allah’s love is not necessarily through grand, occasional gestures, but through small, consistent acts of goodness.

It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 4240, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘Take on only as much as you can do of good deeds, for the best of deeds is that which is done consistently, even if it is little…’

This hadith makes the highest ideals of generosity accessible to a child every single day. You can use it to show them that offering their best does not always mean giving away their most prized possession. It can be as simple as offering their sibling the bigger piece of fruit, giving their parent the more comfortable cushion, or letting a friend have the first turn in a game. These small but consistent acts of preferring others, when done with a sincere heart, are deeply beloved to Allah and are what truly polish and beautify a person’s character.
