Parenting Perspective
When children describe their new body changes as “weird,” they are often expressing fear, confusion, or self-consciousness. The unfamiliar sensations of puberty, new hair, voice changes, growth spurts, or mood shifts, can feel unpredictable and unsettling. Parents can transform that discomfort into curiosity and gratitude by normalising the experience and framing it as part of Allah Almighty’s thoughtful design.
Validate Before You Correct
Start by acknowledging their feelings rather than dismissing them. Say, ‘I understand that these changes feel strange right now, they felt that way for everyone at first.’ Validation reassures your child that their reaction is normal, while also making space for calm discussion. Avoid statements like, ‘It is not weird, stop worrying,’ which may make them feel unheard.
Normalise Through Shared Experience
Let your child know that every person goes through this stage. You can share age-appropriate memories from your own childhood or mention that even friends and siblings experienced similar transitions. Realising they are not alone turns “weird” into “normal.”
Explain the Purpose Behind Change
Teach that these changes are signs of a body working exactly as it should. You might say, ‘Your body is following the plan Allah Almighty created for you. Every change, even the uncomfortable ones, has a purpose.’ When children understand that growth is purposeful, fear turns into respect.
Use Encouraging, Calm Language
Keep your tone relaxed. Replace “weird” with words like “new,” “interesting,” or “amazing.” Encourage curiosity: ‘Would you like me to explain what is happening?’ Offering information replaces anxiety with understanding.
By combining empathy, honesty, and reassurance, you help your child view change as natural, not frightening.
Spiritual Insight
Islam teaches that all creation, including the human body, is designed with wisdom and beauty. Reminding children of this helps them see their growth as part of Allah Almighty’s perfection, not as something odd or flawed.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Mulk (67), Verse 3:
‘He who created seven heavens in layers. You do not see in the creation of the Most Merciful any inconsistency. So return your vision to the sky, do you see any breaks?’
This verse highlights divine harmony, everything Allah Almighty creates, including human growth, is balanced and flawless. Even the smallest changes in the body reflect His precision.
It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 3689, that the holy Prophet Muhammad said:
‘Allah is gentle and loves gentleness in all matters.’
This Hadith reminds parents that their tone and approach should mirror divine gentleness. When you speak softly and reassure your child, you reflect Allah Almighty’s mercy and patience.
By teaching that change is part of divine order, not an accident, parents help children replace the word “weird” with “wonderful.” Their perspective shifts from anxiety to awe, learning to view every stage of growth as a sign of Allah Almighty’s artistry, planned with care and perfection.
