How Do I Protect Them From Seeing Basics As “Boring” Or Expected?

Parenting Perspective

The task is not to make children feel guilty for expecting comfort, but to awaken their sense of wonder about what endures. When you teach that daily comfort is itself a miracle, gratitude begins to sparkle again.

Reawaken Wonder in the Ordinary

Children stop noticing what they never pause to see. Help them rediscover the magic in everyday life through language. While serving food, say, ‘Do you see how Allah gives us this every single day without missing one?’ or when turning on a light, add, ‘Imagine how blessed we are that light appears just when we need it.’ These small sentences restore awe without lecturing. You can also turn routine experiences into moments of discovery: watching rain fill a glass, noticing the sound of clean water, or enjoying the smell of bread.

Add Storytelling to Routine

Stories create meaning around what seems plain. Tell a short bedtime story about a family who regained a basic comfort like electricity or clean water, and reflect softly: ‘Allah gives us these blessings every day without us even asking. That means He is always thinking of us.’ Stories like these make the ordinary feel precious again.

Children find interest where emotion lives. When you tie daily blessings to affection saying, ‘This food keeps you strong so you can play,’ or ‘These clothes keep you warm so we can go out together’ they start to associate basics with care, not boredom. Parents can also model enthusiasm: smiling while eating simple meals or expressing joy when folding clean clothes.

Rotate Gratitude Practices

Keep gratitude fresh by changing how you express it. One week, count blessings aloud at dinner; another, draw them. You could have a “Gratitude Week” where everyone thanks Allah Almighty for one basic blessing each day sight, sleep, water, safety, family. Variety keeps appreciation alive.

Allow Short Absences to Renew Appreciation

Sometimes a brief pause renews value. When travelling, limit a familiar comfort for a day, then reflect together: ‘Now we know how much these small things help us daily.’ The goal is not discomfort but awareness

Spiritual Insight

Islam teaches that shukr (gratitude) begins not with what is rare, but with what is constant. The Quran and Sunnah remind believers that the greatest signs of Allah Almighty are often those that never fail. Helping children notice the daily rhythm of mercy connects their happiness to Allah’s ongoing generosity.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah An Nahl (16), Verses 78:

‘And Allah brought you out of the wombs of your mothers not knowing anything, and He gave you hearing, sight, and hearts that you might give thanks…’

This verse reminds us that gratitude begins with awareness. Parents can say to their children, ‘Allah gave us eyes, ears, and hearts so we can notice His gifts. When we keep seeing and feeling these blessings, life never feels boring.’ Reflective insight: ‘Every breath and heartbeat are miracles we live inside of, even when we forget to look.’

It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 4141, that the holy Prophet Muhammad  said:

‘Whoever among you wakes up secure in his property, healthy in his body, and has his food for the day, it is as if he were given the entire world.’

This Hadith brings the lesson home: the simplest daily gifts (safety, health, food) equal the whole world in worth. Parents can remind children gently, ‘If we have these three things today, it means Allah has already given us everything we truly need.’

By framing basics as blessings that keep arriving through Allah’s mercy, parents teach that repetition is not dullness; it is divine reliability
