How do I protect their sense of wonder about how food reaches us?

Parenting Perspective

A child’s innate sense of wonder is often fragile; it tends to fade rapidly when the processes of modern life make everything feel automatic and instantaneous. To preserve this essential spiritual quality, parents must deliberately introduce moments of intentional deceleration and curiosity into the routine of mealtime.

Cultivating Moments of Amazement

Before starting a meal, intentionally slow down the pace and ask gentle, reflective questions designed not for a lesson, but for a moment of genuine amazement. Ask questions such as: ‘Where do you think this rice began its long journey before it reached our bowl?’ or, ‘Can you imagine all the people who helped bring this food to our table?’ The objective is to foster deep reflection rather than simple knowledge recall. Reinforce these moments by watching documentaries together about nature and agriculture, or by visiting local farms, and then consistently linking those physical experiences to the profound idea that every seed, every single step in the supply chain, moves under Allah Almighty’s command

Creating Rituals of Remembrance

Parents can effectively integrate small, sensory rituals that actively protect this sense of divine continuity between effort and provision. These practices transform routine actions into spiritual exercises:

  • Planting and Nurturing: Engage in planting herbs together or caring for a small fruit bush, allowing them to experience the primary source of growth.
  • Prayers for Provision: Introduce du‘as (supplications) specifically for rain or for the barakah (blessing) in the food source.
  • The Thankfulness Jar: Keep a special jar where the family writes brief notes acknowledging a specific person who contributed to their meal (the farmer, the baker, the driver).

When gratitude and curiosity are consciously merged through these thoughtful methods, a child’s natural sense of wonder deepens and naturally matures into profound worship and appreciation for the Creator.

Spiritual Insight

The Islamic faith teaches that the arrival of sustenance is not a mere logistical convenience but a quiet, daily miracle (mu’jizah)—a continuous expression of Allah Almighty’s attribute as Ar Razzaq (The Provider). This realisation transforms daily provision into a powerful reminder of divine care.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Ankabut (29), Verse 60:

‘And how many a creature carries not its own provision—Allah provides for it and for you, and He is the Hearing, the Knowing…’

This compelling verse directs the child’s attention beyond human effort to the source of all sustenance. It reminds them that provision is never random or left to chance; instead, it flows by Allah’s constant and unwavering mercy and planning through countless unseen and highly sophisticated systems. Consequently, food reaching our table must be viewed not as a given convenience, but as a quiet miracle that is deliberately renewed for us each and every day. This awareness inspires humility and respect.

It is recorded in Jami Tirmidhi, Hadith 2344, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘If you were to rely upon Allah with the reliance He is due, He would provide for you as He provides for the birds: they leave in the morning hungry and return full.’

This beautifully narrated hadith intrinsically nurtures a child’s sense of wonder by using an accessible, familiar image—the bird—to illustrate a colossal spiritual truth. It shows that every single creature’s meal, from the most insignificant insect to the mightiest animal, is an integral part of Allah Almighty’s comprehensive and ongoing care. When this lesson is shared gently and recurrently, it helps children internalise the profound understanding that food is not just manufactured or grown; it is ultimately and unfailingly given. This spiritual perspective successfully transforms all daily meals into tangible, immediate reminders of His boundless mercy and unfailing provision
