Parenting Perspective
When your child hears the hurtful comment that their food ‘smells strange,’ the impact can be deep—not because of the comment’s truth, but because it directly targets their sense of belonging. Your most vital first step as a parent is to protect their sense of fundamental worth, not merely defend the ingredients. Respond with warmth: ‘That specific comment must have felt incredibly hurtful,’ and then immediately affirm: ‘But there is absolutely nothing wrong with our food—it is a cherished part of who we are.’ This simple, strong reassurance is essential for preventing the seed of shame from taking permanent root in their mind.
Reframing Smell as Story
Help your child to clearly understand that every home naturally carries a unique scent—some derived from concentrated spices, others from baking bread, or fresh herbs. Explain to them that these aromas are not random; they are integral smells that actively tell the stories of where people originate. You might share: ‘That smell they found strange is, in fact, the genuine smell of love from our kitchen—it is what strongly connects us to our grandparents and our deep faith.’ Encourage them to describe their food with appealing curiosity instead of immediate defensiveness. They could say, for instance, ‘It has turmeric in it—that spice is renowned for being excellent for health!’ This approach brilliantly converts potential ridicule into an opportunity for gentle education.
Cultivating Quiet Dignity
At home, you must consistently model pride and calmness. Let your child observe you speaking positively about your cultural food around others—perhaps by offering a taste at a school cultural event or confidently sharing an interesting fun fact about a dish. Celebrate these small moments of cultural exchange. Over the long term, your overarching goal is to teach them that true confidence is not about proving others wrong, but about standing tall with unshakeable, quiet dignity. When they learn, with conviction, that every unique aroma, powerful flavour, and beloved tradition is a valuable part of their God-given identity, no comment from a peer can ever diminish it—because their true pride will ultimately come from within.
Spiritual Insight
The Quran affirms that the vast and beautiful diversity found in creation, including cultures, is a distinct sign of Allah Almighty’s majesty. Tell your child that their food carries the continuous blessings of their ancestors and the comprehensive mercy of Allah Almighty, who intentionally made every people unique and distinct. Feeling genuine pride in that God-given uniqueness is, therefore, an act of pure gratitude, not misplaced arrogance.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Ar Rum (30), Verse 22:
‘And among His signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth and the diversity of your tongues and colours. Surely in that are signs for those who know…’
This powerful ayah teaches us that diversity—in languages, physical appearances, and, by clear extension, cultures and cuisines—is a wonderful sign of Allah Almighty’s greatness, not a perceived flaw that requires hiding. Every unique cuisine, every specific home aroma, and every family tradition is an essential thread in the vast, divine tapestry of creation.
The ethics taught in Islam strongly prohibit belittling others, making dignified self-respect the strongest response to any form of mockery.
It is recorded in Riyadh Al Saliheen, Hadith 244, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘A Muslim is a brother of (another) Muslim, he neither wrongs him nor does hand him over to one who does him wrong.’
This seminal Hadith clearly shows that mocking or actively belittling others—even over something seemingly small like food—is directly against the core ethics of Islam. Teach your child that if others choose to speak harshly, they must respond with profound grace, never with shame. Encourage them to offer a heartfelt du’a (supplication) that Allah guides their classmates toward kindness and understanding. When children learn to hold onto their cultural identity with calm, resolute confidence, they successfully mirror the authentic prophetic spirit—patient, dignified, and absolutely unwavering in their self-respect.
