Parenting Perspective
When one child experiences emotional outbursts, it often attracts attention from siblings who may not understand what is happening. Sometimes they laugh, tease, or react impatiently, thinking the behaviour is funny or strange. Such reactions can harm the child’s confidence and deepen feelings of shame. Parents play a crucial role in creating an atmosphere where emotions are treated with empathy, not mockery. The aim is to help siblings learn sensitivity while supporting the child in emotional balance.
Address Mockery with Calmness and Firmness
Begin by addressing mockery immediately but gently. If a sibling laughs or imitates another’s emotional reaction, intervene calmly: ‘We do not laugh when someone feels upset. That is not kind.’ Your tone should be steady, not angry. Children learn more from calm correction than from scolding. When spoken with composure, your words teach that empathy is stronger than humour.
Teach Emotional Diversity and Respect
Have a family talk during a peaceful time. Explain that everyone feels strong emotions sometimes and that laughing at others can make them feel alone. You can say, ‘All of us have moments when we cry or get upset. What helps most is kindness, not teasing.’ Speaking inclusively avoids blaming any one child while setting a rule of respect.
Encourage Empathy Through Action
Encourage empathy through reflection. Ask, ‘How would you feel if someone laughed when you were angry or sad?’ Simple questions like this build compassion far better than long explanations. Reinforce the message that home must be a safe place to express feelings. At the same time, guide siblings toward empathy by giving them small responsibilities. You can say, ‘If you see your brother or sister upset, bring them a glass of water or sit quietly beside them.’ Turning compassion into action teaches love without words.
Model Emotional Stability
Children learn calmness more from the atmosphere you create than from your words. If you feel stressed and take a deep breath instead of reacting sharply, your children will notice. Say aloud, ‘I am feeling upset, so I will calm down for a moment.’ This teaches that emotions can be handled with maturity rather than mockery. Support the child who experiences outbursts with reassurance, not overprotection.
Over time, these consistent messages build a home culture where emotions are understood, not ridiculed. The family learns that kindness during weakness is a form of strength.
Spiritual Insight
Islam emphasises mercy and compassion within families. Laughing at someone’s pain or distress, even unintentionally, goes against the spirit of kindness that the faith teaches. Parents must guide children to see emotional sensitivity as part of good character.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Hujurat (49), Verse 11:
‘O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule another people; perhaps they may be better than them…’
This Ayah directly forbids mockery and reminds believers that every person’s state is known only to Allah Almighty. What appears weak to one may be a test of patience to another. Teaching this verse to siblings instils humility and respect.
It is recorded in Jami Tirmidhi, Hadith 2627, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘A Muslim is the one from whose tongue and hand the other Muslims are safe…’
This Hadith links true faith with safety from harm, including verbal harm. When siblings learn that their words can either comfort or wound, they begin to speak with care.
Parents can remind children that comforting someone who is upset earns reward from Allah Almighty. Even silence can be an act of mercy. You can say, ‘When you stay kind and quiet instead of laughing, Allah Almighty is pleased with you.’ Such reminders give moral meaning to empathy.
By nurturing awareness of kindness as worship, parents raise siblings who protect each other emotionally. The family becomes a circle of understanding, where every tear is met with compassion and every mistake becomes an opportunity for growth. In this environment, both strength and softness thrive, and the home truly reflects the mercy that Islam calls believers to embody.
