Parenting Perspective
The first signs of body hair can take a child by surprise. What appears to adults as a minor physical change can feel sudden and deeply unsettling to a young person. Parents can gently guide them through this moment, transforming initial confusion into calm understanding. The aim is to make this experience one of reassurance and confidence rather than one of fear.
Prepare for Puberty with Gentle Conversation
It is best to start preparing your child well before the physical change begins. Around the age of nine or ten, you should begin gentle conversations about how bodies grow. You might say, ‘As you grow older, your body will begin to look a little different. You will see new hair appearing, and that is completely normal.’ Simple words spoken early plant seeds of comfort. When the change finally arrives, your child will recognise it as something expected, not something frightening.
Respond Calmly When They Notice the Change
If your child notices hair and reacts with worry, it is vital to remain composed. Do not gasp or react with surprise, as your tone sets the emotional response for them. Smile gently and say, ‘That is perfectly fine. It means your body is healthy and growing just the way Allah Almighty planned.’ Linking the event to divine wisdom replaces confusion with a sense of pride and acceptance.
Explain calmly that body hair appears because the body is becoming stronger and preparing for adulthood. Share that everyone, including parents, friends, and even the Prophets, went through this exact stage. This sense of shared experience helps children feel less isolated.
Connect Growth to Responsibility
Emphasise that physical change is not a loss of childhood but a natural and necessary step towards responsibility. Let your words reflect confidence rather than mere instruction: ‘You are growing, and that means you are learning how to look after yourself in new ways.’ When spoken with warmth, these words make growth feel exciting rather than intimidating.
Explain that new hair in certain areas is private and must be cared for respectfully. Use calm and factual language, avoiding any euphemisms or teasing. Say, ‘This is something we look after quietly because our bodies are special. It is part of how we show respect to ourselves.’ Teaching modesty together with acceptance creates a healthy balance. If your child asks why hair grows in some places and not others, answer simply and without hesitation. If you are uncertain, it is fine to say, ‘That is a good question. Let us find out together.’ Openness builds trust and prevents secrecy.
Spiritual Insight
Islam teaches that every stage of life and every physical development is part of Allah Almighty’s perfect design. The appearance of body hair is neither strange nor shameful; it is a clear sign of maturity that brings with it new responsibilities. Guiding a child through this understanding strengthens both their faith and their self-esteem.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Mulk (67), Verse 23:
‘Say, it is He who has produced you and made for you hearing and vision and hearts; little are you grateful…’
This Ayah reminds believers that every aspect of their body is a divine gift. By acknowledging the body’s changes with gratitude, a child learns to see growth as a blessing, not as a burden.
It is recorded in Riyadh Al Saliheen, Hadith 1203, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Five things are part of the fitrah: circumcision, shaving the pubic hair, trimming the moustache, clipping the nails, and removing the hair under the arms…’
This Hadith connects body care to the natural human balance (Fitrah). Parents can explain that noticing hair growth simply means the body is entering the stage where these Sunnah practices become relevant. It is not a cause for fear, but an opportunity to learn new habits of cleanliness and dignity.
By sharing these teachings gently, parents give their child a necessary spiritual context for physical change. The child learns that every stage of life brings new opportunities for worship. The first sign of body hair becomes not a moment of alarm, but a sign of Allah Almighty’s ongoing creation and wisdom.
