How do I prepare them for growth spurts without causing fear?

Parenting Perspective

Growth spurts can feel overwhelming for children. Their bodies change rapidly; bones stretch, clothes suddenly feel small, appetite increases, and even sleep patterns shift. If parents approach these changes with fear, secrecy, or constant warnings, children may feel anxious or out of control. To prepare them without causing fear, parents need to combine gentle education, reassurance, and normalisation.

Framing Growth as Divine Design

Start by explaining that growth spurts are part of how Allah Almighty designed the body to get stronger and taller. A parent might say, ‘Your body will grow in different stages, sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly, and that is Allah’s beautiful way of helping you become who you are meant to be.’ This shifts the focus from fear of change to appreciation of Allah’s design.

  • Use positive examples. Share how everyone in the family went through growth spurts at different times. Show them photos of yourself or older siblings when you were their age.
  • Avoid alarming phrases like ‘You are going to outgrow everything overnight’ and instead use calming words such as ‘Your body will grow little by little, and we will take care of you along the way.’

Encouraging Awareness and Control

Encourage them to notice the strengths of their growing body. For instance, point out how longer legs may help them run faster, or a bigger appetite means their body is asking for fuel. Frame these shifts as signs of health and strength rather than problems.

  • Practically, prepare them for the changes by involving them in choices, such as picking comfortable clothes, learning simple stretches, or understanding the need for extra rest. This gives them a sense of control.
  • Finally, keep the tone joyful. Celebrate milestones with gentle affirmations, such as ‘MashaAllah, Allah is helping your body grow just as it should.’

Spiritual Insight

Islam reminds us that every stage of growth is part of Allah Almighty’s perfect plan. The human body develops in phases that reflect His wisdom and mercy. Parents can frame growth spurts as part of this divine unfolding, teaching children that nothing in their body happens without purpose.

The Artistry of Creation

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Muminun (23), Verses 13-14:

‘Then We placed him as a sperm-drop in a firm lodging. Then We made the sperm-drop into a clinging clot, and We made the clot into a lump, and We made the lump into bones, and We covered the bones with flesh; then We developed him into another creation. So blessed is Allah, the Best of Creators…’

These verses show that each stage of physical change is a sign of Allah’s power and artistry. Parents can remind their children that just as Allah carefully guided their body in the womb, He continues to guide every phase of their growth.

All Timing is Decreed

It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2653b, that the Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘Allah has written the decree of every creature fifty thousand years before He created the heavens and the earth.’

This Hadith assures children that their body’s timing, whether they grow earlier, later, slower, or faster, is written with precision by Allah Almighty. Nothing is accidental.

By presenting growth spurts as part of Allah’s perfect design, parents prepare their children with calmness, knowledge, and gratitude. Instead of fear, children feel security and trust, knowing that their growth is guided by the One who loves them most.
