How do I prepare my child for language assessments?
Parenting Perspective
A Calm and Reassuring Approach
Language assessments can feel stressful for both you and your child, but with a calm approach, they can become just another step in your child’s learning journey. Start by explaining to your child what the assessment is for, keeping your explanation simple and reassuring. Let them know it is not a test designed to catch them out, but a way to see what they already know and where they might need some extra help.
You can practise gently at home by going over common words, reading simple books together, or playing word games that build vocabulary and confidence. Use role-play to practise speaking clearly in short sentences or answering basic questions. Keep your tone positive and relaxed; if your child senses that you are calm, they are more likely to feel calm too. On the day, remind them that it is fine to pause, think, or ask for words to be repeated. Celebrate their effort afterwards, no matter the outcome. This shows your child that doing their best is what truly matters.
Spiritual Insight
Sincere Effort is Rewarded
In Islam, every effort made with sincere intention carries a reward, regardless of the result. Preparing your child for an assessment is not about chasing perfection but about guiding them with hope and trust in Allah Almighty’s help. Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Ankaboot (29), Verse 69:
‘And those people that endeavour (to please) Us (Allah Almighty); so, We (Allah Almighty) shall indeed, guide them (to those pathways) that lead to Us; and indeed, Allah (Almighty) is with those who are benevolent (in their actions).’
This verse reminds us that Allah Almighty sees every small step, including the quiet moments you spend practising words and building courage.
Make Learning Gentle
The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ encouraged parents and teachers to make learning gentle and not a burden. It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 6125, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Make things easy and do not make things difficult.’
Preparing for a language assessment should feel like an extension of daily learning, not something that fills your home with worry. Make Dua with your child before the assessment, asking Allah Almighty for calmness, clarity, and confidence. Praise their honesty and effort, reminding them that the ability to speak well is a gift from Allah Almighty that grows over time.
