How do I link empathy with hope in Allah Almighty’s justice?

Parenting Perspective

It is a beautiful, though sometimes painful, experience to watch your child develop a heart that feels deeply for others. When they encounter the intense suffering of the world, whether through the news, a story, or a local tragedy, their natural response is often a mix of profound sadness and confusion. They feel the pain of others, which is the gift of empathy, but if that feeling is not anchored, it can quickly turn into overwhelming despair, helplessness, or even cynicism. They may ask, ‘Why did Allah Almighty allow this?’ or ‘Why does nobody help?’ Your challenge is to affirm their feeling while simultaneously guiding them toward the unwavering certainty of Divine justice.

Empathy, on its own, can become a crushing burden, leading to burnout or the temptation to simply stop looking at suffering. Hope in Allah Almighty’s justice, however, acts as the spiritual anchor, transforming that painful feeling into powerful motivation and profound peace. You must teach your child that their empathy is the signal, and hope in justice is the solution.

Empathy as Motivation for Action

The first step in connecting empathy to hope is teaching your child that deep feeling must result in small, tangible actions. Helplessness is the enemy of hope. When your child is sad about the suffering of others, acknowledge their feeling fully, perhaps saying, ‘I see how much that hurts your heart, and that means you have a very precious soul.’ Then, you can gently pivot them towards asking: ‘What small goodness can our family contribute to this situation?’

This action does not have to be large or financial. It could involve making Du’a for the sufferers, writing a letter of support, gathering essential items for a local charity, or simply ensuring they treat those around them with extra kindness and fairness. You are teaching them that their tears are valuable, but that their hands are even more so. By engaging in even the tiniest action, they shift from a position of passive observer to an active agent of goodness, which immediately reduces their sense of despair. They realise that they cannot fix the whole world, but they can certainly honour their small corner of it.

Validating the Limits of Human Justice

To prepare your child for the inevitable disappointments of this life, you must be honest about the flaws in human systems. They will see that some wrongdoers here escape punishment, and some good people receive no recognition for their sacrifices. This can shatter their belief in justice itself. When they express frustration about this unfairness, validate their observation, saying something like, ‘You are right, my dear. Sometimes people are unjust, and sometimes judges make mistakes. Sometimes the world is very messy, and we cannot see the fairness we crave.’

This validation is vital because it shows them you share their moral compass. Once you have acknowledged the temporary nature and failings of human justice, you can gently introduce the concept of the eternal, flawless standard. Explain that their heart’s yearning for perfect justice is a spiritual instinct placed there by Allah Almighty. This craving for balance is the proof that a perfect Judge exists.

This is the moment you introduce the name of Allah Almighty: Al-Adl, The Just. You explain that Allah Almighty’s justice is not limited to this life; it is comprehensive and perfect, encompassing all time and every intention. This Divine promise is the only thing that can soothe the ache of empathy when human solutions fail.

Spiritual Insight

The reason a believer can look at the immense suffering in the world and still hold onto hope is the absolute certainty that Allah Almighty is Just and that accountability is inevitable. Our empathy, which is essentially the pain of seeing injustice, is the human echo of the Divine attribute of Al-Adl. We feel pain because Allah Almighty created us with an innate knowledge of what is right. When we feel overwhelmed by the unfairness of this temporary world, our faith provides the relief valve: the ultimate balance of the Day of Judgment.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah An-Nisa (4), Verse 40:

‘Indeed, Allah Almighty does not do injustice, [even] as much as a speck of a dust; and if there is a good deed, He multiplies it and gives from [Himself] a great reward.’

This verse establishes the most foundational truth for overcoming despair: Allah Almighty’s justice is absolute, precise, and perfect. You can explain to your child that nothing, not even the smallest wrong or the smallest kindness, is ever missed or forgotten. This ensures that every tear shed by the oppressed is recorded, and every slight injustice committed by the unjust will be addressed. When your child feels deep sadness for a victim, you can remind them that though the world may fail to see it, the Judge of all judges sees it perfectly. Furthermore, the verse offers immense hope: Allah Almighty does not merely reward good deeds; He multiplies them, promising a reward far exceeding the effort.

To illustrate the comprehensiveness of this Divine justice, holy Prophet Muhammad  offered us examples that reach across all creation, reassuring us that the balance will be restored for everyone.

It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2582b, that holy Prophet Muhammad  said:

‘The rights will be restored to their owners on the Day of Resurrection, even the case of the horned sheep which butted the hornless sheep will be decided.’

This Hadith provides a simple, unforgettable image of ultimate justice. It tells your child that even the rights of animals, a horned sheep and a hornless sheep, will be settled. If such seemingly small animal injustices are addressed, how much more certain is the justice for human beings who have suffered grave oppression? This assurance is what allows the compassionate heart to feel the pain of the world without being consumed by it. We feel empathy, which inspires us to act in this world, and we maintain hope, knowing that all incomplete justice will be made whole in the presence of the All-Just.

By linking their compassionate feeling to this Divine promise, you ensure that your child’s heart remains soft, motivated, and anchored in hope, never giving way to the coldness of cynicism or the paralysis of despair.
