How Do I Know if My Child’s Posture is Affecting Their Gross Motor Growth?

Parenting Perspective

Children with poor posture may experience fatigue, discomfort, or difficulty performing physical tasks such as running, jumping, or climbing. Beneath these challenges, they can feel frustration, self-consciousness, or a sense of being “less capable” than peers. Recognising the emotional impact alongside the physical signs helps parents respond with both empathy and practical guidance. Poor posture is not always obvious, but subtle indicators can signal that support is needed to protect and enhance gross motor development.

Observe Functional Alignment

Watch how your child moves during everyday activities. Notice whether they consistently:

  • Slouch while standing or sitting.
  • Lean heavily to one side, especially when carrying items.
  • Struggle to maintain balance during walking, climbing stairs, or reaching overhead.

Parent script: ‘I see you are leaning a bit when you reach up. Let us practise standing tall together for a few moments.’

Pay attention to their endurance, efficiency of movement, and whether fatigue occurs faster than expected during play. Persistent asymmetry, repeated discomfort, or avoidance of movement may suggest that posture is hindering gross motor growth.

Track Developmental Skills

Compare how your child performs gross motor tasks over time. Simple exercises can reveal compensatory movements caused by poor posture:

  • Hopping on one foot.
  • Running straight lines.
  • Navigating small obstacles.

Document changes in balance, coordination, or stability. Small, observable markers, such as difficulty lifting arms fully, uneven steps, or frequent loss of balance, can provide insight into whether posture is limiting physical progress.

Promote Posture Awareness

Integrate gentle exercises that strengthen core muscles and promote alignment. Practising in short, consistent sessions allows your child to experience gradual improvement without feeling pressured.

  • Activities such as plank holds (modified for children), seated stretches, or playful balance games encourage postural control.
  • Yoga poses adapted for children can be fun and effective.

Parent script: ‘Let us try this fun balance pose together; it will make standing and moving easier.’

Seek Professional Guidance if Needed

If you notice persistent slouching, frequent falls, asymmetry (one shoulder or hip consistently higher), or discomfort during movement, consult a paediatrician or physiotherapist. Professionals can assess musculoskeletal alignment, identify underlying conditions, and recommend targeted exercises to support posture and gross motor growth. Early intervention ensures that posture does not become a barrier to developing coordination, strength, and independence.

Spiritual Insight

Islam encourages caring for the body with mindfulness, guidance, and patience, recognising that physical wellbeing is intertwined with overall growth. Supporting children’s posture reflects a holistic approach to nurturing their abilities.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah At Tawbah (9), Verses 105:

‘And say, Work, for Allah will see your work and His Messenger and the believers…’

This verse reminds parents that effort, consistency, and mindful guidance are valued, including in fostering healthy physical development. Every supportive action taken for a child’s growth is recognised and meaningful.

It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 79, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘The strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah than the weak believer, while there is good in both.’

This Hadith emphasises the importance of strength, effort, and perseverance. By observing movement patterns, practising posture exercises, and seeking professional support when necessary, parents help children develop strength, stability, and gross motor competence. Gradual improvements build confidence, physical ability, and a sense of capability that lasts into adolescence and beyond.

Through careful observation, structured exercises, and timely professional guidance, parents can ensure that posture supports rather than hinders gross motor growth. Each small improvement nurtures strength, coordination, and confidence, reflecting the patient, compassionate, and spiritually anchored guidance emphasised in Islam.
