Parenting Perspective
Children thrive in an environment of support, not judgement. Safety reminders are essential, whether about wearing helmets, watching for cars, or staying within sight. However, if they are delivered in a way that sounds like constant criticism, a child may feel nagged or discouraged. The goal is to provide safety guidance in a manner that feels caring, respectful, and empowering.
Frame Reminders with Positive Language
Structure your reminders in a positive rather than a negative way. Instead of saying, ‘Do not run so fast, you will fall,’ you could try, ‘Let us stay close to each other so we can walk safely together.’ This use of cooperative phrasing encourages a child to work with you, without making them feel as though they are being scolded.
Maintain a Gentle and Caring Tone
A child often absorbs the tone of a message more than the words themselves. A calm, gentle voice reassures them that you are guiding them from a place of love, not criticising them out of frustration. When reminders are given kindly, children learn to associate them with care, which strengthens the parent-child bond. The emotional delivery is key.
Explain the ‘Why’ Behind the Rule
Children are far more likely to listen and cooperate when they understand the reason for a rule. Instead of a simple command like, ‘Wear your helmet,’ you can explain, ‘Your helmet is important because it protects your amazing brain and keeps you safe while you ride.’ Linking rules to their benefits transforms a reminder into a valuable lesson, thereby building understanding.
Offer Small, Empowering Choices
Empower your child by offering small choices within the safety rule. For example, ‘Would you like to ride on the left or the right side of this path, as long as you stay close to me?’ Giving them a sense of shared control reduces resistance and helps them to feel that their autonomy is being respected.
Balance Reminders with Positive Reinforcement
If a safety reminder is combined with praise, it is received much more positively. You could say, ‘I really like how you are watching where you step. Just remember to hold the railing, too.’ This balance of encouragement and correction helps in softening the message and maintaining your child’s confidence.
Spiritual Insight
The Islamic faith places a profound emphasis on kindness, gentleness, and mercy when guiding others, particularly children. Safety reminders, therefore, should reflect the same beautiful principles of gentle teaching that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ embodied.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah An Nahl (16), Verse 125:
‘Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction, and argue with them in a way that is best…’
This verse highlights the importance of wisdom and gentleness in all forms of communication. Parents can use this as a reminder for themselves that even necessary guidance, such as a safety rule, should be delivered with the warmth of wisdom and kindness.
It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2594a, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Kindness is not to be found in anything but that it adds to its beauty, and it is not withdrawn from anything but that it makes it defective.’
This beautiful hadith teaches that kindness enhances every interaction, while its absence diminishes it. Parents can reflect this teaching by delivering safety reminders in a way that adds beauty to their child’s learning journey, rather than making them feel flawed or criticised.
