How do I keep gadgets from disturbing quiet spiritual time?

Parenting Perspective

In a world that is saturated with constant notifications, it is very easy for gadgets to disrupt the calm of spiritual moments in the home. Children are highly observant; they will notice whether prayer and Quran recitation have to compete with screens for your attention. If the screens consistently win, they may naturally assume that faith is of lesser importance. The goal is therefore not to ban technology entirely, but to manage it thoughtfully so that time dedicated to spiritual connection feels special, quiet, and protected from distractions.

Establish Clear Tech-Free Zones and Times

It is helpful to set a clear and consistent family rule that certain places in the home, such as the prayer corner or the dining table, are always free from gadgets. You can pair this with specific protected times, such as during Salah or for a short period of Quran recitation each day. This teaches children that these moments are special and deserve undivided focus.

Model Your Own Detachment from Technology

Your personal example is the most powerful teacher. Make a habit of putting your own phone aside before you begin your prayer, and consider saying aloud, ‘I am putting this away now because it is time to connect with Allah.’ This small but significant action clearly demonstrates to your children that your devices do not have more power over you than your connection to your faith.

Replace Screen Time with Gentle, Calming Rituals

You can mark the beginning of a period of spiritual time with a simple family ritual. This could be something as small as lighting a soft lamp in your prayer corner or playing some gentle Quran recitation in the background. These calming cues help to signal a change in the atmosphere of the home, making the transition away from screens easier for everyone.

Offer Quiet, Faith-Centred Alternatives

It can be difficult for young children to disconnect from stimulation. It is a good idea to offer them quiet, tangible alternatives to hold their focus. This could include a set of tasbih beads to handle, a colouring book with Islamic themes, or a single word of dhikr to repeat softly. Having something to do with their hands can keep their focus gentle and faith-centred.

Verbally Acknowledge and Celebrate the Stillness

After a period of quiet reflection or worship, take a moment to praise the feeling of calm in the home. A simple comment like, ‘Alhamdulillah, did it not feel so peaceful without any phones or noise for a while?’ helps your children to link the feeling of tranquillity with the act of detachment, which makes it feel like a rewarding experience.

By managing technology in this mindful way, you teach your children by example that their faith deserves their undivided attention, not in competition with their gadgets, but in a place of honour above them.

Spiritual Insight

The Quran on the Greatness of Remembrance

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Ankaboot (29), Verses 45:

(O Prophet Muhammad ) Convey to them what has been revealed upon you from the Book (noble Quran), and establish prayers; as indeed, praying restrains (mankind) from immoralities and all those irrational actions; and the remembrance of Allah (Almighty) is the greatest (form of assistance and guidance for mankind)…’

This verse reminds us that the remembrance of Allah holds a place of unique importance, higher than all worldly distractions. Teaching the meaning of this verse to your children can help them to understand why gadgets are put aside during times of worship: not as a punishment, but as a way of honouring something that is far greater.

Prophetic Wisdom on Remembrance Bringing Life to the Heart

It is recorded in Riyadh Al Saliheen, Hadith 1434, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘Those who remember Allah and those who do not are like the living and the dead.’

This powerful hadith highlights the profound truth that remembrance is what brings life, light, and peace to the human heart. By creating a home environment where gadgets are intentionally set aside in favour of spiritual connection, you show your children that true vitality is found in the remembrance of Allah, not in endless digital noise. Over time, this habit can help them to prioritise their faith over fleeting distractions, preserving their ability to find moments of calm and connection with their Lord.
