Parenting Perspective
Children feel profoundly motivated and emotionally secure when their development and growth are actively celebrated and supported by the wider family network. The core emotion here is a powerful sense of belonging and collective encouragement; when grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins actively participate, children instantly perceive physical activity as a valued and enjoyable shared experience rather than an isolated, boring chore.
Communicate Goals Clearly
It is important to clearly explain to relatives why physical activity matters so much for your child’s holistic health and burgeoning confidence. Parent script: ‘We are actively encouraging [child’s name] to try out different games and physical activities. Your enthusiastic support and participation can make it much more fun and truly meaningful for them.’ Clear communication helps relatives understand their essential role in fostering positive, lifelong experiences.
Plan Inclusive Activities
Thoughtfully arrange family-friendly games and physical activities that everyone, regardless of fitness level, can participate in. Examples include nature walks, simple group races, or easy ball games. Parent script: ‘Let us all try a short relay together and cheer each other on enthusiastically. The main aim is simply to enjoy ourselves, not just to focus on winning.’ Inclusive activities successfully create shared enjoyment and significantly reduce performance pressure on the child.
Celebrate Effort, Not Outcome
Strongly encourage all relatives to consistently notice and praise the child’s effort and persistence rather than focusing solely on winning or achieving results. Parent script: ‘Did you notice how [child’s name] tried climbing the wall carefully and did not give up? That is wonderful effort and resilience.’ Praising consistent effort builds and nurtures the child’s crucial self-esteem and resilience against setbacks.
Model Active Behaviour
Gently invite relatives to participate themselves and join in the movement. Children learn their deepest values from observing the actions of influential adults. Parent script: ‘Watch me try this stretching routine with you; it is completely okay if I wobble too, as long as I try.’ Modelling participation signals loudly and clearly that physical movement and health are valuable for every member of the family, irrespective of age or ability.
Spiritual Insight
Islam universally encourages nurturing both physical strength and overall wellbeing while highly valuing supportive family relationships. Guiding the extended family to actively participate in a child’s physical growth journey reflects the spiritual principle of collective benefit (ta’awun) and shared responsibility.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 286:
‘Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear…’
This comforting verse reminds parents and family members to approach physical activity in a truly balanced and compassionate way, encouraging children gently according to their distinct abilities without ever applying undue pressure.
It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 79, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘The strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah than the weak believer, while there is good in both.’
This hadith clearly highlights the spiritual value of physical and inner strength and encourages creating a loving environment where children can confidently grow and flourish under supportive, loving guidance from the entire family.
By clearly communicating their goals, thoughtfully planning inclusive activities, consistently celebrating sincere effort, and actively modelling movement, parents can successfully involve the extended family in fostering both their child’s physical skills and emotional confidence. This powerful collective support nurtures a child who enjoys movement, feels profoundly supported and secure, and experiences consistent, healthy growth within a loving, spiritually aligned environment.
