Parenting Perspective
The digital world is undeniably both a vast source of learning and a treacherous field of deception. Many prominent online voices, including influencers, videos, and various forums, present severely twisted versions of manhood that mistakenly glorify dominance, disrespect, or deep emotional detachment. Without consistent parental guidance, boys can easily internalise these destructive messages, confusing aggressive arrogance for genuine strength and casual cruelty for quiet confidence. As a dedicated parent, your primary goal is to equip your son not with fear of the internet, but with the necessary insight and faith to navigate its complexities wisely and safely.
Beginning with Honest, Calm Dialogue
When you initially address these external online influences, you must begin with sincere trust, never with immediate restriction. Ask your son openly what specific kind of content he regularly sees online and how it truly makes him feel. Listen very carefully and patiently before offering any response. This foundational approach builds openness and actively prevents dangerous secrecy.
Then, thoughtfully explain, ‘Not everyone who sounds confident online is actually speaking the truth. Some people are intentionally spreading ideas that directly go against what Allah Almighty teaches about noble manhood.’ Avoid scolding or harsh criticism; instead, use curiosity to gently invite reflection: ‘What kind of man do you think Allah Almighty truly wants you to be?‘ This helps your son develop essential self awareness before continuous exposure translates into harmful internalisation.
Defining Manhood Through the Lens of Faith
Consistently remind your son that manhood in Islam is firmly built upon taqwa (God consciousness), compassion, and deep discipline. Say, ‘Being a man does not mean being dominant or loud in the room. It means being responsible, just, and profoundly merciful, just like holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.’
Encourage him actively to look for true role models who clearly demonstrate humility and integrity, not fleeting fame or unwarranted aggression. You can guide him toward reliable Islamic scholars, dedicated teachers, and enriching content that truly nurtures the mind and purposefully purifies the heart. This approach successfully redefines manhood as service to Allah Almighty, never superiority over others.
Teaching Media Literacy as a Moral Skill
Empower your son to systematically question and critically evaluate everything he consumes online. Teach him the importance of asking simple, direct questions:
- ‘Who is behind this specific message?‘
- ‘Does this content align with what Allah Almighty and His Messenger ﷺ taught?‘
- ‘What specific emotions is this content trying to create in me: pride, unnecessary anger, or spiritual peace?‘
When he sincerely learns to filter information consciously and critically, he becomes far less susceptible to external manipulation. You can simply say, ‘Every click you make subtly shapes your soul; protect it just as carefully as you would protect your physical heart.’ Such moral awareness instantly transforms digital discipline into a dedicated act of faith.
Encouraging Real World Experiences of True Strength
Online platforms often dangerously distort masculinity by portraying it solely as dominance. You must proactively counter this by helping your son genuinely experience real, beneficial acts of strength: volunteering in the community, actively helping his family, or consistently demonstrating patience during difficulty. Afterwards, thoughtfully reflect with him: ‘This is what it truly means to be strong: using your energy for good, not for pride or show.’
Remind him often that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ explicitly said the strongest man is the one who successfully controls himself when angry. Emotional mastery, not mere physical power, is the true, lasting definition of courage in Islam.
Building a Spiritual Relationship with Technology
Establish clear digital boundaries in the home as dedicated acts of worship, never as punitive punishment. Explain, ‘We consciously avoid harmful content not simply because people have forbidden it, but because it severely damages our hearts, and our hearts ultimately belong to Allah Almighty.’
Encourage him to consciously fill his time with beneficial content: Qur’an recitations, engaging Islamic lectures, and positive, constructive hobbies. When his heart is consistently nourished with the truth, surrounding falsehood naturally loses its powerful appeal.
End your conversation with lasting reassurance: ‘The internet can often mislead, but when you constantly stay close to Allah Almighty, He will protect your heart and mind from confusion and deception.’
Spiritual Insight
Beyond the screens and various social influences lies the deeper, enduring spiritual truth: that manhood in Islam is entirely defined by sincere servitude to Allah Almighty, never by submission to temporary worldly ideals. The noble Quran and the Sunnah consistently teach that true strength is fundamentally rooted in righteousness, and that the purity of the heart is the authentic mark of masculinity.
Guarding the Heart from Corruption
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Ash Shams (91), Verses 7-9:
‘And [by] the soul and He who proportioned it. And inspired it with discernment of its wickedness and its righteousness. He has succeeded who purifies it, and he has failed who corrupts it…‘
This profound verse clearly teaches that every human being is intrinsically equipped with a moral compass purposefully placed within by Allah Almighty. Help your son clearly see that when he consciously guards his heart and his mind from harmful online content, he is actively honouring that divine, internal guidance. His purity then becomes his most reliable protection.
Tell him, ‘Every time you purposefully turn away from something that actively displeases Allah Almighty, you genuinely strengthen your soul.’ In doing this, he successfully transforms a simple act of self control into an integral act of sincere worship.
Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ as the Model of Noble Manhood
It is recorded in Al Adab Al Mufrad, Hadith 1317, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘The strong man is not the one who overcomes people by his strength, but the one who controls himself when angry.‘
This definitive Hadith perfectly and beautifully defines the essential balance between strength and necessary restraint. Remind your son constantly that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ consciously combined immense courage with deep compassion, actively defending the truth, protecting those in need, and never intentionally harming others with either his words or his actions.
Teach him sincerely that true manhood does not require him to prove his superiority, whether online or offline. It absolutely requires him to control the self, constantly seek Allah Almighty’s pleasure, and consistently demonstrate mercy: these are the enduring values that bring both genuine strength and lasting peace.
When your son sincerely learns that his mind and his heart are sacred trusts from Allah Almighty, he will naturally approach the digital world with necessary discernment. He will ultimately realise that rejecting harmful content is not a restriction, but a profound form of freedom: freedom from deception, freedom from arrogance, and freedom from sin.
Through your patience, consistent positive example, and deep spiritual guidance, he will clearly see that intentionally avoiding such negative influences is not a withdrawal from the world, but a deep, lasting connection to the ultimate truth. He will grow into a young man who navigates technology with purpose: using it only to spread goodness, to actively seek knowledge, and to strengthen his most important asset, his faith.
In time, he will truly understand that real manhood is never found in the online noise of pride and rebellion, but firmly resides in the quiet, inner discipline of serving Allah Almighty: honouring His divine guidance, diligently protecting his soul, and walking through this life with unwavering integrity and light.
