How do I help my child speak up kindly for what is right?

Parenting Perspective

Teach Assertiveness, Not Aggression

Teaching your child to speak up for what is right in a kind and respectful manner is an important skill that will serve them throughout their lives. You can start by explaining the importance of standing up for justice, kindness, and fairness. You might say, ‘It is important to speak up when something is wrong, but we should always do it in a way that is kind and respectful, even if we disagree with someone.’ This helps your child to understand that speaking up is not just about being right, but about being considerate of others’ feelings while expressing their thoughts.

Praise and Model Respectful Communication

It is important to praise your child when they speak up in a kind way. You can reinforce that being respectful, even when confronting unfairness, shows strength and good character. ‘I am really proud of how you stood up for what is right today. You did it kindly and with respect, and that is what matters most.’ Finally, you can model respectful communication in your own interactions. Children often learn by observing their parents, so show them how to handle disagreements and other issues with kindness and calmness.

Spiritual Insight

In Islam, speaking up for what is right is highly encouraged, and it is equally important to do so with kindness and respect. Allah Almighty says in the noble Quran at Surah Aalai Imran (3), Verse 104:

‘(In order that) there may develop from you a nation that invites (people) towards betterment; by promoting that which is positive (in its outcome) and forbidding that which is negative (in its outcome); and those are the successful people.’

This verse teaches us that standing up for what is right is not only a duty but that it should also be done with wisdom and respect.

The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also exemplified the importance of speaking kindly and truthfully. It is recorded in Sunan Abi Dawood, Hadith 3252, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stated:

‘Speak the truth, even if it is bitter.’

This Hadith teaches us that speaking up for what is right should always be done with respect, gentleness, and integrity. By helping your child to speak up kindly for what is right, you are guiding them to live in line with these Islamic values of justice, kindness, and respect.
