How do I help my child handle teasing from peers for being modest?

Parenting Perspective

Children who choose modesty in their clothing or behaviour often find themselves standing out among their peers. In a culture where self-expression is frequently linked to external appearance, modesty can easily be misunderstood as shyness, excessive strictness, or a lack of confidence. When classmates tease your child for this choice, it can severely shake their self-esteem and cause them to question their core values. Your primary role as a parent is to help them understand that modesty is a source of strength, not a weakness. It requires far more courage to remain faithful to one’s values than to simply follow the crowd.

Beginning with Comfort and Validation

When your child shares that they have been teased, you must first and foremost listen. Avoid immediately dismissing their feelings with unhelpful statements such as, ‘Just ignore them.’ Instead, respond with genuine empathy: ‘I understand that must have felt hurtful and embarrassing. It takes real bravery to stay different when others do not understand your choices.’ This validation calms their emotions and ensures that the communication remains open and trusting.

Reframing Modesty as Confidence

Explain to your child that modesty is not about hiding oneself; it is fundamentally about knowing and respecting one’s own worth. You can say, ‘You dress and act modestly because you respect yourself too much to seek attention in superficial ways. You do not need to display everything about yourself to feel seen or valued.’ This crucial distinction helps your child link modesty directly to self-respect rather than to fear or restriction.

  • You can also add, ‘People who tease you often lack the maturity to understand what it means to have strong personal standards. Staying strong in your choice, despite their comments, shows real, deep confidence.’

Giving Them Practical, Assertive Responses

Equip your child with calm and dignified ways to respond when they are teased. Practising these responses beforehand can give them a feeling of control in the moment. You could suggest they use simple, assertive phrases such as:

  • ‘I like dressing this way it feels comfortable and appropriate for me.’
  • ‘We all have the freedom to make different choices, and this one is mine.’

These replies are polite yet clearly assertive, demonstrating maturity without inviting confrontation. Teach them that silence can also be powerful; not every negative comment deserves an emotional reaction or even a reply.

Sharing Stories of Strength in Faith

Remind your child that every single believer who sincerely follows Allah Almighty’s guidance will inevitably face trials and tests. Talk about the lives of the holy Prophet Muhammad  and his companions, who were often mocked for their beliefs, yet remained incredibly patient and dignified. Say, ‘You are part of that same noble legacy a person who stands firm with grace and principle when others do not understand. That is something to be truly proud of.’

Providing Consistent Praise and Encouragement

Acknowledge their effort at home and praise their courage. Say, ‘I am profoundly proud that you chose modesty even though you knew it would not be easy at school. That shows incredible strength and faith.’ Regular, sincere encouragement builds a strong inner confidence that external teasing cannot easily destabilise. You should also help your child find positive role models such as relatives, teachers, or older youth who practise modesty proudly to show them that they are not alone.

Spiritual Insight

Islam universally honours modesty (Haya) as one of the greatest virtues of faith. It serves to protect one’s dignity, keeps the heart pure from unnecessary emotional entanglement, and reflects a deep inner strength. Choosing to be modest in an immodest environment is thus a form of quiet worship an act of courage that earns immense reward from the Creator.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Ahzab (33), Verse 59:

‘O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to bring down over themselves [part] of their outer garments. That is more suitable that they will be recognised and not be abused. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful…’

This verse demonstrates that modesty leads to recognition through respect and dignity, not through external appearance. You can explain it to your child like this: ‘Allah Almighty clearly says that modesty protects you from harm and earns you honour. People may tease you because they do not understand the value of that protection, but Allah Almighty knows your effort and your pure intention. That is what truly matters.’ This perspective helps them perceive teasing as a sign of ignorance, not a valid judgment of their character.

It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 37a, that the holy Prophet Muhammad  said:

‘Modesty brings nothing except good.’

This Hadith firmly reinforces the spiritual principle that modesty is always beneficial and brings positive outcomes, even when others mock or fail to appreciate it. You can tell your child, ‘Every time you choose to live with modesty, you are actively choosing goodness. Even if others laugh today, Allah Almighty will reward your patience and sincerity fully.’

When children successfully learn that modesty is both a powerful protection and a badge of honour, their entire perspective shifts. They begin to wear their values with quiet pride instead of insecurity. With your empathy, wisdom, and steady encouragement, your child will ultimately understand that being teased for modesty is not a cause for shame it is proof that they are walking a path of integrity that Allah Almighty Himself highly praises.
