How do I help my child connect the Hijrah to resilience and faith?

Parenting Perspective

The story of the Hijrah, the migration of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ from Makkah to Madinah, is far more than a historical event. It is one of the most powerful and practical lessons in resilience, courage, and what it means to have complete trust in Allah Almighty. For a child to connect with its deeper meaning, we must present it not as an escape from danger, but as a proactive journey towards faith. The Prophet ﷺ was not fleeing out of fear; he was moving forward in obedience to a divine command, sacrificing his home, comfort, and security to protect and preserve the message of Islam.

A Journey of Unwavering Trust

To make the story come alive, focus on the moments that best illustrate the Prophet’s ﷺ complete reliance on Allah. The most powerful of these is the time he and his companion, Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه, spent hiding in the cave of Thawr.

Describe the scene in detail: the assassins of the Quraysh were just outside, their voices audible, their feet visible from within the cave. In this moment of extreme vulnerability, Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه felt a natural fear for the Prophet’s ﷺ safety. But the Prophet’s ﷺ response was one of perfect calm and certainty. He reassured his dear friend with the immortal words recorded in the Quran: ‘Do not grieve; indeed, Allah is with us.’ This is the heart of the lesson. True resilience is not the absence of fear, but the presence of a faith so strong that it brings tranquillity even in the face of imminent danger.

Connecting Sacrifice to Personal Growth

The Hijrah was a journey of immense sacrifice, and this is a theme that can be connected directly to a child’s life. While their challenges may be different, the principle of letting go for a greater purpose is universal.

Link the story to their own experiences, such as moving to a new school, facing a setback in their studies, or adjusting to a significant family change. These moments also involve leaving the familiar behind and stepping into the unknown. Teach them that, like the Prophet ﷺ, their strength in these times comes from their faith. Encourage them to use the same tools of reliance he did, such as making du’a and repeating powerful phrases like ‘Hasbunallahu wa ni‘mal wakeel’ (Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best Disposer of affairs) when they feel overwhelmed. The Hijrah is the ultimate proof that leaving something for the sake of Allah never results in loss, but always leads to transformation and growth.

Spiritual Insight

The Hijrah was not a mere migration from one city to another; it was a divinely orchestrated pivot in human history. It was the event that marked the transition of the early Muslims from a persecuted minority to a nascent community-state, and it represented a physical journey that mirrored a profound spiritual migration

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah At Tawbah (9), Verse 40:

‘If you do not aid the Prophet, Allah has already aided him when those who disbelieved drove him out [of Makkah] as one of two, when they were in the cave and he said to his companion, ‘Do not grieve; indeed, Allah is with us.’ And Allah sent down His tranquillity upon him and supported him with angels you did not s1ee…’

This verse captures the very essence of the Hijrah: that in our moments of greatest vulnerability, when all worldly support seems to have vanished, the companionship of Allah is our ultimate and sufficient aid. It is a powerful reminder that His help is not contingent on our strength or numbers. This divine reassurance is the source of all true resilience.

It is recorded in Sunan Nisai, Hadith 75, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘Actions are but by intentions, and every man shall have but that which he intended…’

This foundational Hadith, often cited as the first in major collections, is inextricably linked to the Hijrah. It teaches that the value of any action, no matter how great, lies in the purity of the intention behind it. The physical act of leaving Makkah could have been done for many reasons, but it was the intention to preserve the faith and obey Allah that made this migration a sacred and world-changing event. It is a timeless reminder for children that the strength of their faith is what gives meaning and value to their actions.
