How do I handle negative comments about raising bilingual kids?

Parenting Perspective

Respond with Calm Confidence

Many parents hear unhelpful comments like, ‘You are confusing your child,’ or ‘They will never speak properly,’ when they choose to raise their child to be bilingual or multilingual. It can feel discouraging, but research and real-life stories show that growing up with more than one language is a gift, not a disadvantage.

If someone makes a negative comment, it helps to respond calmly and confidently. You might say, ‘Alhamdulillah, they are learning well, and we are supporting them with love and patience.’ Avoid arguing or trying to convince everyone; instead, focus on what works for your family. Protect your child from hearing harsh remarks that could make them feel ashamed of their home language.

Talk to your child about why speaking more than one language is special; it connects them to their family, culture, and faith. Share simple success stories of other bilingual people they can relate to. Keep using both languages in your daily life, through stories, play, and conversations. When your child sees you stand firm with warmth and pride, they learn that their words, no matter the language, are something to be cherished and protected.

Spiritual Insight

A Sign of Allah’s Wisdom

Islam honours every blessing that strengthens family and Ummah ties, and language is among these blessings. Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Hujuraat (49), Verse 13:

‘O mankind, indeed, We (Allah Almighty) have created you all from one man and one woman; and placed you amongst various nations and tribes for your introduction to each other; indeed, the best of you in the judgement of Allah (Almighty) is the one who is most virtuous….’

This verse reminds us that our differences in language and culture are part of Allah Almighty’s wisdom.

A Blessed Path

It is recorded in Jami Tirmidhi, Hadith 2646, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stated:

‘Whoever treads a path in search of knowledge, Allah Almighty will make easy for him a path to Paradise.’

This Hadith Shareef reminds us that our efforts to learn and protect knowledge, including language, are counted as worship. Make Dua that Allah Almighty grants your family the strength and confidence to hold onto your home language. Teach your child that their words can be a bridge of connection and Dawah when they are used kindly and wisely. By handling comments with dignity and trust in Allah Almighty, you show your child that their language is not just words but part of their Amanah and identity, InshaAllah.
