How do I handle it when travel breaks our Sunnah food routine?

Parenting Perspective

Travel, with its inherent disruption to daily life, will inevitably challenge even the most established family routines. It is perfectly common for the practice of consuming Sunnah foods to be interrupted during trips. As a parent, the primary objective is to maintain the spiritual essence of this habit without introducing stress or guilt into the travel experience. The key is to embrace flexibility and preparation, teaching your child that their connection to the Sunnah is adaptable and not confined to the home environment.

Proactive Preparation for a Seamless Practice

The most effective way to maintain a routine while travelling is through thoughtful and proactive preparation. Before your trip, create a dedicated ‘travel Sunnah kit’. This can be a small, reusable container or pouch filled with portable and non-perishable Sunnah foods. Items such as premium dates, a small, sealed jar of honey, a container of olives, or a bag of walnuts are excellent choices. Having these items readily available on planes, in cars, or at your destination removes the stress of having to find suitable options on the go.

Fostering Ownership and Positive Association

A wonderful way to encourage your child to continue the habit while travelling is to involve them directly in the preparations. Allow them to take ownership by letting them choose which Sunnah foods to pack and helping them assemble their personal travel kit. This sense of responsibility can transform the routine from a parental directive into a personal and exciting part of their travel adventure. You can frame it as their special task to ensure the family has its blessed snacks for the journey.

The Grace of Flexibility and Intentionality

While preparation is vital, it is equally important to model flexibility and grace. Travel schedules can be unpredictable, and it may not always be possible to eat at the usual times. Teach your child that the intention behind the act is more significant than the timing. A Sunnah snack eaten between sightseeing activities or just before boarding a flight is just as valid and rewarded. If a day is missed entirely, it is crucial to remain calm and avoid expressing disappointment or blame. Children observe and absorb their parents’ reactions. Your calm and reassuring demeanour will teach them that faith is adaptable and merciful.

Spiritual Insight

Travel offers a unique spiritual lens through which to view our daily practices. When we are removed from the comfort and predictability of our homes, simple routines can become powerful anchors for our faith. Continuing the habit of eating Sunnah foods while on a journey is not merely about maintaining a schedule; it is about carrying a piece of our spiritual identity with us wherever we go.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 172:

O you who are believers, consume from amongst that which is purified, which We (Allah Almighty) have provided for you…’

This verse contains a powerful dual command: to partake in the good provisions (tayyibat) and to express gratitude. Travel amplifies the context of this verse beautifully. As we explore different parts of Allah’s earth, we witness His provision in diverse forms. Consuming a Sunnah food, a provision specifically recommended for its blessings, becomes a profound act of gratitude while on the move. It is a conscious acknowledgement that our sustenance, whether at home or abroad, comes solely from Him.

It is recorded in Riyadh Al saliheen, Hadith 292, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

Whatever you spend seeking thereby the Pleasure of Allah, will have its reward, even the morsel which you put in the mouth of your wife.’

This hadith is a comforting and empowering reminder for any family on the move. It places the ultimate emphasis on niyyah (intention), the cornerstone of all actions in Islam. While travel can disrupt the physical routine, it has no power to disrupt a sincere intention held within the heart. This teaching is liberating. It means that the spiritual connection and the reward for following the Sunnah are not confined to a specific time or place.
