Parenting Perspective
Family is a Source of Strength
Explaining to your children that brothers and sisters can support each other involves teaching them the value of mutual respect, empathy, and cooperation within the family. You can start by emphasising that family is a source of strength, and that siblings are meant to help and to care for each other, not just in times of joy but also in times of difficulty. You might say, ‘As brothers and sisters, you are each other’s biggest support. You should look out for one another, help each other when things are tough, and celebrate each other’s successes.’
Work Together as a Team
You can teach them to appreciate each other’s differences and to work together as a team. If one sibling excels in a certain area, you can encourage the other to ask them for help or for guidance. For example, ‘If your sister is good at maths, you can ask her for help. Similarly, if your brother excels in sports, you can support him by encouraging him.’
Model Supportive Behaviour
Finally, it is important to model the behaviour of supporting each other within the family. Show your children that when family members work together, they can achieve great things, and that this sense of mutual support is what strengthens the family bond.
Spiritual Insight
In Islam, the relationship between siblings is one of mutual support and kindness. Allah Almighty says in the noble Quran at Surah Al Hujuraat (49), Verse 10:
‘Indeed, the believers are brothers (to each other); so, make peace with your brothers….’
This verse teaches us that as believers, we are all part of a larger family, and that we should strive to support, respect, and care for one another.
The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also encouraged mutual support among family members. It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 3587, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stated:
‘The best of you are those who are the best to their families.’
This Hadith emphasises that the family is the foundation of a good character, and that brothers and sisters should support one another in every circumstance. By helping your children to understand the importance of supporting each other, you are instilling in them these Islamic values of kindness, respect, and cooperation.
