Parenting Perspective
Cleaning a blender that has been used for raw meat marinades is essential for preventing cross-contamination and ensuring food safety in your kitchen. Harmful bacteria from raw meat can linger in the blender if it is not cleaned thoroughly, posing a health risk to your family. It is vital to clean the appliance properly after every use, especially after preparing raw meat dishes. Taking the time to do this not only prevents contamination but also ensures that the blender is ready for its next use without any residual smells or bacteria.
Quick Rinse Immediately After Use
After preparing a raw meat marinade, it is best to rinse the blender immediately. Do not allow the marinade to dry, as this will make it much harder to clean and increases the risk of bacteria growth. A quick rinse helps to dislodge any remaining particles from the blender’s blades and sides. Simply fill the blender jug with warm water, add a few drops of dish soap, and blend for 10 to 15 seconds. Afterwards, pour out the soapy water and rinse the blender thoroughly with clean water.
Deep Clean with Natural Ingredients
Once the blender has been rinsed, it is time for a more thorough deep clean. A mixture of baking soda and vinegar is highly effective for breaking down grease, removing odours, and sanitising the appliance naturally.
- Baking soda and vinegar method: Sprinkle a teaspoon of baking soda inside the blender, followed by a small amount of white vinegar. The two ingredients will create a fizzing reaction that helps to lift stubborn food particles. Add warm water to fill the blender halfway, and blend on high for about 30 seconds. Finally, rinse the blender thoroughly with warm water.
- Dish soap and hot water method: Alternatively, you can fill the blender halfway with hot water and a few drops of dish soap. Blend for 30 seconds to dislodge any remaining residue, and then rinse thoroughly. The hot water is particularly effective in helping to sanitise the blender.
Disinfect the Blender
For added peace of mind, you can sanitise the blender using a food-safe disinfectant or a mild bleach solution (one tablespoon of bleach to one litre of water). Pour the chosen solution into the blender and let it sit for a few minutes before rinsing it thoroughly with warm water to remove any chemical traces. This step ensures that harmful bacteria from the raw meat are completely eradicated.
Dry and Store Properly
Once the blender is clean and disinfected, ensure it is completely dry before storing it. You can allow it to air-dry or use a clean towel to dry it manually. If your blender parts are dishwasher-safe, running them through a cycle provides an extra level of sanitisation. Storing the blender in a clean, dry place helps prevent any bacteria from re-contaminating it.
Spiritual Insight
In Islam, cleanliness is highly emphasised, particularly when it comes to the preparation of food. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us that purity in all aspects of life is an essential part of our faith. By ensuring that kitchen tools like blenders are meticulously cleaned after use with raw meat, we are following this important teaching, safeguarding our health and protecting our families.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verses 222:
‘“…Indeed, Allah (Almighty) loves those who repent excessively and those who adore their personal purification”.’
This verse reminds us that purification, of our bodies, minds, and surroundings, is a beloved act in the sight of Allah Almighty. By thoroughly cleaning your blender after it has been used for raw meat, you are practising a form of purification. This act, when done with mindfulness and the right intention, becomes an act of worship that aligns with the Islamic values of cleanliness and care.
It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 280, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Purity is half of faith.’
This powerful Hadith underscores that cleanliness and purity are integral to our faith. Keeping our kitchen tools free from contaminants is not just about physical health; it is a spiritual practice. It demonstrates respect for the food Allah Almighty has provided and for the well-being of our family. Through this routine, you teach your children the importance of hygiene in a way that is deeply connected to their faith, making our homes not only clean but spiritually sound.
