Parenting Perspective
When selecting toys for children, it is essential to look beyond simple entertainment and thoughtfully consider how the toys contribute to development. Fine motor strength is developed through toys that actively encourage grasping, pinching, threading, stacking, twisting, and manipulating small parts. These activities are foundational, preparing children for complex skills such as writing, performing self-care tasks, and achieving general independence in daily life. Choosing toys with a purposeful function ensures that playtime becomes both enjoyable and significantly educational.
Identifying Toys That Demand Hand Coordination
Seek out toys that specifically require the hands and eyes to work in concert, promoting dexterity.
- Coordination Builders: Toys such as building blocks, shape sorters, simple puzzles, or bead threading sets are excellent for fostering hand-eye coordination.
- Skill Requirements: They require children to align pieces accurately, rotate shapes, and use both hands together, which inherently strengthens finger control and precision.
- Engaging Script: Use playful language to encourage effort: ‘Let us see how many blocks you can stack without them falling.’ This frames practice as a fun challenge.
Preferring Open-Ended Play Over Electronic Stimulation
While electronic toys may offer entertainment, they often restrict the active, creative use of a child’s hands.
- Active Engagement: In contrast, open-ended toys like play-dough or clay, stacking cups, or construction sets fully engage the child’s imagination and keep their fingers constantly moving and working.
- Dual Benefit: These toys build crucial creativity alongside the necessary motor skills.
Rotating Toys to Maintain Interest
Children’s interest can wane quickly if the same toys are accessible every day.
- Keep Play Fresh: Implementing a rotation of toys on a weekly basis helps to keep the activities fresh and motivates children to continue practising.
- Diverse Skill Building: Variety also ensures that different muscle groups are strengthened through different types of play and manipulation.
Spiritual Insight
Islam teaches that parents are trusted caretakers (ra’ee) responsible for the upbringing and nurturing of their children. Providing them with tools and opportunities that benefit their physical and intellectual growth is an important part of fulfilling this divine responsibility. Play is viewed not merely as amusement; it is a means of effective learning and building useful, functional skills for life.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Luqman (31), Verses 18–19:
‘And do not turn your face away from people in pride, nor walk in arrogance upon the earth. Indeed, Allah does not like every self-deluded boaster. And be moderate in your pace and lower your voice; indeed, the most disagreeable of sounds is the voice of donkeys…’
This verse highlights the importance of moderation and balance in conduct and character. Just as children must be guided towards moderation in their character development, parents should similarly provide balance in their play by choosing toys that both entertain and nurture valuable life skills, rather than leaning exclusively towards fleeting amusement.
It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 1829, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Every one of you is a shepherd, and every one of you will be asked about his flock.’
This Hadith serves as a powerful reminder that parents are responsible for the overall guidance and growth of their children. Choosing toys that strengthen their hands and developing skills, rather than those that only distract them, is a conscious decision integral to this responsibility (amanah). Use a gentle, guiding statement: ‘I am choosing this toy because it will help your hands grow strong while you enjoy playing.’
By mindfully selecting toys that appropriately challenge children’s hands and minds, parents achieve a crucial balance between fun and purposeful development. This intentional approach not only builds essential fine motor strength but also reflects the profound responsibility Islam places on parents to nurture their children with wisdom and care.
