Parenting Perspective
Teenagers often feel significant social pressure to follow rapidly shifting grooming and beauty trends. The emotional core of this behaviour is often anxiety about fitting in and the fear of missing out, while parents may feel concern over escalating costs and establishing sound long-term habits. Helping teens navigate these pressures requires empathy, clear guidance, and practical strategies that respect both their desire for self-expression and the family’s resources.
Name the Feeling and Validate
Begin by acknowledging the teen’s underlying feelings. One might say, ‘I understand that keeping up with new styles feels important to you; it shows you care about how you present yourself and connect with friends.’ This crucial step of validation allows the teen to feel heard and significantly reduces defensiveness before the discussion shifts to budgetary boundaries.
Set Practical Boundaries and Budgets
It is important to explain that trends change quickly and that consistent, thoughtful grooming creates more value than chasing every new style. A parent could use the following script: ‘Let us plan a monthly grooming budget together so you can enjoy your routine without worrying about overspending.’ Encourage the teen to prioritise services and products based on frequency of use, necessity, and personal preference. This approach makes spending predictable, manageable, and involves the teen in the decision-making process.
Promote Resourcefulness and Home Care
Teach teens how to mix professional services with careful home care. For instance, a periodic salon visit can be complemented with daily or weekly home routines using reliable products. A parent might suggest: ‘We can schedule one major salon visit this month, and for the rest of the time you can maintain your style at home – this keeps things balanced.’ This strategy fosters independence and self-discipline while effectively controlling costs.
Encourage Reflection and Personal Choice
Invite teens to consider whether certain trends truly align with their personal style and comfort or if they are simply following peer pressure. Ask reflective questions such as: ‘Do you enjoy this trend for yourself, or because everyone else is doing it?’ Reflection helps them to differentiate between personal preference and external influence, cultivating self-awareness and genuine self-confidence in their choices.
Introduce Cost Awareness
Teach teens to track spending and evaluate the concept of value. Discuss financial concepts such as cost-per-use or long-term benefit. A useful parent script is: ‘Let us calculate how much each product or service really costs over time – it can be surprising and help us decide what is truly worth the investment.’ This exercise builds practical financial literacy and informed decision-making skills. By blending validation, boundaries, reflection, and practical budgeting, teens learn to enjoy grooming without overspending, internalising that style is most meaningful when it is intentional, sustainable, and aligned with personal values rather than fleeting trends.
Spiritual Insight
Islam encourages moderation, gratitude, and the mindful use of resources. Teaching teens to balance their grooming desires with financial awareness nurtures patience, self-control, and ethical decision-making, grounding their habits in faith.
The Principle of Moderation
The noble Quran provides clear guidance on thoughtful spending and actively discourages excess and wastefulness. Parents can explain that mindful grooming respects both family resources and the broader Islamic principle of moderation in life.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Isra (17), Verse 26:
“And give the relative his right, and the needy, and the traveller, and do not spend wastefully…”
This verse serves as a reminder to be responsible stewards of wealth.
The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ emphasised moderation and consistency in all aspects of daily life. This teaching can be directly connected to making grooming choices that are thoughtful and proportionate.
It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 1029, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
“Do not exaggerate in spending, for Allah Almighty loves moderation in all affairs.”
Parents can connect this teaching to grooming choices: by planning and limiting spending, teens demonstrate responsibility, self-restraint, and alignment with Islamic values. One can gently state: ‘By keeping your grooming balanced and thoughtful, you are showing care for yourself, your family, and your faith.’ Through empathy, practical guidance, and spiritual framing, teens internalise that self-care can be meaningful without excess, reinforcing responsibility, financial literacy, and gratitude.
