How do I address unequal cash gifts from relatives without causing a rift?

Parenting Perspective

Unequal cash gifts from relatives can sometimes lead to feelings of resentment or jealousy among siblings, especially if one child feels they have been favoured over another. The key is to address the situation with care and diplomacy, ensuring that no child feels inferior or overlooked. By reinforcing the values of gratitude and fairness, and by explaining that gifts are often given with different intentions, you can help to prevent any unnecessary tension.

Acknowledge the Feelings of the Child

You can start by validating any feelings of disappointment or confusion. A simple statement like, ‘I know it can feel unfair when one of you receives more money than the other. Let us talk about it calmly,’ can help your child to feel heard and opens the door for an honest discussion.

Explain the Reasons Behind the Gifts

Clarify that relatives may give gifts for a variety of different reasons or based on their own particular circumstances. ‘Sometimes relatives give gifts based on their own preferences or what they can afford at the time, but that does not mean that one of you is loved more than the other.’ This helps a child to understand that the differences in gifts are not a reflection of their personal worth.

Reinforce the Value of Gratitude

Encourage your children to be grateful for whatever they receive from their relatives. ‘We should always be thankful for the gifts we are given, no matter how big or small they are. It is the thought and the kindness behind the gift that really matters.’ This simple practice can teach a child to focus on a feeling of gratitude, rather than on comparison.

Reassure Them of Your Equal Love and Support

It is crucial to reassure both of your children that your own love and support for them are equal, regardless of the gifts they may receive from others. ‘Both of you are equally important to me, and nothing can ever change that. The love and care we share as a family is far more valuable than any gift.’ This reinforces the idea that true familial love is not tied to material items and helps to build their emotional security

Spiritual Insight

In Islam, the values of fairness, gratitude, and contentment are strongly emphasised, especially when it comes to material possessions.1 By fostering these values in your children, you are helping them to align with the beautiful Islamic teachings of justice and humility.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah An Nisa (4), Verses 32:

‘And do not wish for that by which Allah has made some of you exceed others. For men is a share of what they have earned, and for women is a share of what they have earned…’

This verse encourages us to avoid feelings of jealousy and comparison that are based on material possessions. Instead, it teaches us to appreciate what we have and to focus on the unique blessings we have been given.

It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 6445, that the holy Prophet Muhammad  said:

‘Richness is not in having many possessions, but richness is being content with oneself…’

This beautiful hadith teaches us that our true value is found not in our material wealth, but in our character and our sense of contentment. By teaching your children these timeless principles, you can help them to develop an attitude of gratitude and to focus on what truly matters in life.
