How do I address early emotional ups and downs with compassion?

Parenting Perspective

As children approach puberty, emotional fluctuations often appear before any significant physical signs. They may swing between excitement and irritability or confidence and withdrawal, sometimes within the same day. These shifts can puzzle parents, but they are a normal part of the hormonal adjustments that prepare the body and brain for adolescence. The key is not to control these emotions, but to guide your child through them with empathy and steadiness.

Listen Before You Correct

When your child becomes upset, resist the immediate urge to fix the problem or criticise their reaction. Instead, start by simply listening. A phrase like, ‘I can see this feels really hard for you right now’, validates their experience. Children who feel heard learn that their emotions are safe to express, even when they are messy. This builds emotional literacy and strengthens your bond.

Create Emotional Routines for Stability

Just as the body needs sleep and nourishment, emotions benefit from rhythm and calm. Establish predictable family moments, such as shared meals, short walks, or quiet bedtime conversations, that offer your child stability. This consistency teaches them that even when their feelings are unpredictable, family support remains constant.

Teach Gentle Coping Skills

Guide your child towards small self-regulation habits, like taking deep breaths, stepping outside for fresh air, or reciting short Du’as. You might say, ‘When you feel angry or sad, take a moment to breathe and remember that Allah Almighty understands’. These simple tools empower them to manage their emotions rather than feeling overwhelmed by them.

Model Calmness and Patience

Children mirror what they observe. If they see you respond to stress with patience and kindness, they are more likely to learn those same qualities. When you model calm behaviour during their emotional moments, you teach self-control more effectively than any lecture ever could.

By meeting emotional turbulence with compassion, you turn difficult moments into lessons in empathy, resilience, and faith.

Spiritual Insight

Islam teaches a balance between acknowledging emotions and responding to them with faith. Feelings are a natural part of being human, but how we manage them defines our strength. Parents can use moments of emotional upheaval to model mercy, patience, and the remembrance of Allah Almighty.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Ar Ra’d (13), Verse 28:

‘Verily, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest.’

This verse reminds both children and parents that true calmness is not found in controlling circumstances but in turning to Allah. When emotions feel heavy, the remembrance of God brings peace and perspective.

It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2594a, that the holy Prophet Muhammad said:

‘Gentleness is not found in anything except that it beautifies it, and it is not withdrawn from anything except that it makes it defective.’

This Hadith beautifully links compassion with positive outcomes. Parents who respond gently during their child’s emotional storms beautify the home environment and strengthen the bond of trust. By guiding your child with patience and mercy, you teach them that their emotions are not enemies but signs of growth. Through remembrance, compassion, and calm communication, you help them learn that even in the hardest moments, Allah Almighty provides peace for every heart that turns to Him.
