How Can We Celebrate Progress on Savings Goals Without Boasting?

Parenting Perspective

Celebrating progress in savings is a vital way to reinforce positive financial habits. However, it is crucial to do so in a manner that cultivates humility and gratitude, rather than fostering boasting or unhealthy competition. The core principle is to shift the focus from the monetary amount saved to the effort, discipline, and personal responsibility demonstrated. By teaching children that financial success stems from virtuous habits, parents ensure that saving remains a personal journey and a practice in thankfulness, not a public display of superiority.

Acknowledge the Effort, Not the Outcome

Start by highlighting the sustained effort and discipline invested in reaching the goal, rather than merely the final figure.

  • Verbal Reinforcement: Use phrases such as, “I am so proud of how consistently you have worked towards your goal. It is not easy to save money, and the fact that you have done it shows how responsible you are with your finances.”
  • Focus on Character: By concentrating on the effort, you elevate the character traits of disciplinepatience, and hard work, which hold intrinsic value, above the mere accumulation of wealth.

Encourage Gratitude and Humility

Frame the celebration around expressing gratitude for the progress made and the valuable lessons learned throughout the process.

  • Growth Mindset: Emphasise that the achievement is shared and educational: “We have reached this goal together, and we are so grateful for how much we have learned about saving, discipline, and patience. Now that you have achieved this, we can use it wisely and consider what we can do next.”
  • Personal Connection: This approach encourages humility by linking the achievement to personal growth and self-understanding, decoupling it from the need for external validation.

Celebrate with a Meaningful Gesture

Instead of focusing on material rewards or lavish spending, commemorate the achievement with a gesture that reinforces the values of wise spending, charity, or sharing.

  • Generosity: Suggest: “Let us celebrate by making a small donation to charity from your savings, or by allocating some funds towards a shared activity or experience that the whole family can enjoy.”
  • Shifting Focus: This action effectively shifts the celebration’s focus from personal gain to giving back or spending judiciously, aligning the achievement with the virtues of responsible money management.

Make It a Collective Learning Moment

Utilise the occasion to reinforce the value of saving for all children involved, helping them understand that financial success is a blessing that should be appreciated and used wisely.

  • Family Goal: Suggest: “You have done a great job reaching your goal. Let us all think about what we can do together to save for something special as a family.”
  • Avoid Comparison: This practice maintains the focus on collective growth and avoids individual comparisons that could potentially lead to jealousy or rivalry.

Spiritual Insight

Within Islam, the principle of humility (tawadhu) is central to spiritual development and the proper handling of all blessings, including wealth. Islamic teachings mandate gratitude for the blessings bestowed by Allah Almighty while strictly prohibiting boasting (fakhr) or arrogance (kibr) regarding achievements. Celebrating financial progress must, therefore, be anchored in thankfulness and the profound understanding that all wealth originates from the Creator. It is a tool for doing good, not a means to assert superiority.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 261:

The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like that of a seed of grain that grows seven ears, each bearing one hundred grains.”

This noble verse illustrates that the value of financial discipline and charity is multiplied by Allah Almighty. The reward for good deeds, including consistent financial planning, is tied not to the monetary amount or the final outcome, but to the sincerity and intention behind the action. By teaching children to celebrate their savings progress humbly, they learn that their efforts are valued by Allah Almighty, not because of the magnitude of their achievement, but because of the genuine effort and intention they put forth.

It is recorded in Sunan Nasai, Hadith 762, that the holy Prophet Muhammad  said:

The most beloved deeds to Allah are those that are most consistent, even if they are few.”

This hadith teaches that consistency and sincerity in effort outweigh the size of the ultimate achievement. By celebrating progress on savings goals in a modest, gracious way, parents can instil the value of steady, sincere effort and gratitude, perfectly aligning the financial practice with Islamic teachings of humility and thankfulness for the Creator’s blessings. Through this guidance, children learn that financial success is an opportunity for greater generosity, humility, and spiritual growth, in line with the timeless teachings of the Deen
