How can parents model restraint with devices when their job requires a constant online presence?

Parenting Perspective

Explain Work vs. Distraction

It can be confusing for a child to be told to limit their screen time while seeing a parent on a device for hours. It is helpful for parents to clarify this distinction by explaining, ‘I am using my phone for my work, which is different from using it for games or entertainment.’ Clarifying this difference helps children understand that screen time rules are based on purpose, not just on restriction.

Set Visible Boundaries Around Work

Even when a job requires significant online activity, a parent can still model restraint by setting visible limits. Simple actions like putting devices away during meals, making direct eye contact when a child is speaking, or scheduling short, dedicated breaks to connect with the family are crucial. These small acts demonstrate that while screens are a necessary tool for work, family presence always takes priority. This teaches children that achieving balance is possible, even with demanding responsibilities.

Share Your Strategies for Balance

Parents can also be transparent about the challenges of their work. Saying something like, ‘I sometimes feel tired from being online all day, so I need to take breaks to refresh my mind,’ makes the experience relatable. By sharing practical strategies such as stepping outside, taking time for prayer, or reading a book, parents show children healthy ways to manage digital fatigue. This makes the concept of restraint practical rather than abstract.

Spiritual Insight

The Principle of Moderation

Islam promotes moderation as a guiding principle in all aspects of life. This applies not only to how we manage our wealth but also to how we allocate our time and attention, including our use of digital devices.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Furqaan (25), Verse 67:

And it is those people that do not spend extravagantly, nor miserly; and (act in such a way) that is a balanced format between these two (extreme characteristics).

The Strength of Self-Control

True strength is not measured by physical power but by the ability to control oneself, especially under pressure. Exercising restraint with our devices, even when work demands our attention, is a modern form of this discipline.

It is recorded in Riyadh Al Saliheen, 45, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘The strong man is not the one who can wrestle, but the one who controls himself at the time of anger.’

Managing Technology with Faith

By clearly distinguishing work from distraction, modelling firm boundaries, and practising moderation, parents show that restraint is achievable even with a demanding online job. This helps children learn to view technology as a tool that can be managed, rather than a force that controls family life. In doing so, daily habits become aligned with the principles of discipline and trust in Allah Almighty.
