Parenting Perspective
The most profound lessons in love are not taught through words but are caught through witness. For a child, the love for the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ will blossom most naturally when they see it reflected in the people they trust the most: their parents. A parent’s character, conduct, and compassion are the living curriculum through which a child learns what it truly means to follow the Messenger of Allah. This lived example is far more powerful than any formal lesson.
The Scent of Remembrance in the Home
A child’s heart is drawn to what is familiar and cherished in their home. The first step is to make the remembrance of the Prophet ﷺ a warm and constant presence. This is achieved not through forced rituals but through sincere, everyday expressions of love. Make a habit of sending blessings (Salawat) upon him aloud, not just after prayers, but as a natural response to life. In a moment of stress, a softly whispered Salawat teaches a child that his remembrance is a source of peace. In a moment of joy, it teaches them that he is connected to our gratitude. Mention his blessed name with a visible softness and reverence in your voice.
Living the Prophetic Character
Children are keen observers; they learn from what you do far more than from what you say. Therefore, your actions must become a mirror of the Prophet ﷺ’s beautiful manners (akhlaq).Strive to embody his conduct in your daily interactions. Greet your family and others warmly with a smile, as he did. Practise patience when you feel anger rising, remembering his unparalleled self-control. Be the first to forgive, demonstrating his boundless mercy. When you share food with a neighbour, help someone in need, or speak with gentle honesty, you can softly connect the act to his example: ‘This is what our beloved Prophet ﷺ taught us to do’.
Spiritual Insight
The act of a parent modelling love for the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is one of the most significant forms of spiritual nurturing they can offer. It is the practical, living da’wah (invitation) within the home, demonstrating that Islam is not a set of abstract rules but a transformative path of love and emulation. This parental example is the most authentic translation of faith into action, proving that love for the Messenger is the very heart of a believer’s submission to Allah.
The noble Quran makes it clear that the ultimate sign of faith is adherence to the Prophet ﷺ’s guidance. This is not merely about following laws but about embracing the spirit he embodied.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Hashr (59), Verses 7:
‘And whatever the Messenger has given you, take; and whatever he has forbidden you, refrain from…’
This verse is a comprehensive command. ‘Whatever the Messenger has given you’ includes his character, his priorities, his compassion, his patience, and his beautiful manners. When a parent strives to embody these qualities, their life becomes a living commentary on this verse. They are demonstrating to their child that love for the Prophet ﷺ is proven through practice. It is an active and all-encompassing commitment to align one’s life with his, turning every action into an expression of devotion.
This principle of loving obedience is further clarified in the Hadith, where the Prophet ﷺ links obedience to him directly with obedience to Allah. This elevates the act of following the Sunnah to the highest spiritual station.
It is recorded in Sunan Nisai, Hadith 4193, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Whoever obeys me has obeyed Allah, and whoever disobeys me has disobeyed Allah’.
Obedience is the natural consequence of love and trust. We follow those we love. When parents model this loving obedience in a gentle and consistent manner, they teach a profound spiritual truth: the path to Allah’s pleasure passes directly through sincere love and emulation of His final Messenger. Children who witness this do not see the Sunnah as a restrictive set of rules but as a joyful expression of devotion. They learn that love for the Prophet ﷺ is not something that is merely declared with the tongue; it is lived with the soul, and this lived love becomes the most beautiful and enduring inheritance they can receive.
