How can parents encourage teens to join a Ramadan tech detox without creating resentment?

Parenting Perspective

Frame It as a Spiritual Gain, Not a Restriction

Teenagers are likely to resist a ‘tech detox’ if they perceive it as a punishment. It is far more effective for parents to frame it as a spiritual gain, explaining it as a way to make Ramadan more meaningful: ‘Ramadan is about creating more space in our hearts for Allah, and reducing our digital distractions can help us feel that peace more deeply.’ When the detox is presented as a gift to the soul rather than a simple ban, teens are more likely to appreciate its value.

Involve Them in the Decision-Making

Instead of imposing rigid rules, parents should involve their teens in the decision-making process. Asking, ‘What do you think we could all cut back on this Ramadan to make more time for the Quran and for each other?’ gives them a voice. When teens help to set the boundaries, such as no phones during iftar or using a Quran app instead of social media, they feel a sense of ownership over the plan rather than feeling controlled.

Replace Screens with Uplifting Alternatives

A successful detox must offer something fulfilling in return for the time spent offline. Parents can encourage teens to find uplifting alternatives to screen time, such as joining a youth Quran circle, volunteering at an iftar distribution, or participating more in family worship. When they experience the genuine connection, calm, and joy that comes from these activities, the detox feels like an enrichment, not a deprivation.

Spiritual Insight

Fasting as a Means of Discipline

The Quran teaches that the purpose of fasting is to cultivate righteousness (taqwa). This discipline extends beyond just food and drink to include anything that distracts the heart from the remembrance of Allah Almighty.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 183:

‘O you who are believers, fasting has been made obligatory upon you, in the same way that it was made obligatory upon those people before you, so that you may attain piety.’

Sincere Efforts are Rewarded

Every sincere effort made during Ramadan for the sake of Allah is immensely rewarded. A tech detox, undertaken with the right intention, can be a profound act of worship that brings forgiveness and blessings.

It is recorded in Sunan Nisai, 2202, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘Whoever fasts Ramadan out of faith and seeking reward, his previous sins will be forgiven.’

A Season of Calm and Growth

By framing the detox as a spiritual opportunity, involving teens in the planning, and replacing screen time with meaningful activities, parents can help make Ramadan a true season of calm and growth. Through this experience, teenagers can learn that practising self-control in the digital world is a powerful way of drawing closer to Allah Almighty.
