How can parents encourage children to balance fun entertainment with spiritually uplifting content?

Parenting Perspective

Frame Balance as a Strength, Not a Restriction

Children tend to see entertainment as ‘fun’ and Islamic content as a ‘duty.’ Parents can reframe this by using a simple food analogy: ‘A healthy life needs both nutritious food and the occasional sweet treat. In the same way, our hearts need both uplifting reminders and time for fun.’ This helps children to see spiritual content as nourishment, not something that is meant to take away their joy.

Make Uplifting Content Engaging and Enjoyable

It is important to introduce spiritually beneficial content in a way that is genuinely enjoyable. This could include watching Islamic cartoons, listening to nasheeds, or discussing the stories of the prophets. When this content is linked with family bonding and positive discussion, children are far more likely to engage with it willingly and see its value.

Create Gentle Routines That Offer Variety

A family can create a simple, gentle rhythm that makes space for both types of content. For example, a weekend movie night could be balanced with a weekly ‘Islamic story time.’ By weaving both into the family routine, children learn the art of moderation naturally. They come to understand that entertainment and faith (iman) can coexist beautifully when guided by positive intention.

Spiritual Insight

Do Not Forget Your Share of This World

Islam is a religion of balance. The Quran encourages believers to seek the Hereafter without abandoning their permissible share of enjoyment and provision in this world. This holistic approach is the foundation of a healthy spiritual life.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Qasas (28), Verse 77:

‘And seek (to discover) from what Allah (Almighty) has bestowed upon you for the abode in the Hereafter; and do not forget your (true) functionality in this world; and show favour (onto others) as Allah (Almighty) has shown favour upon you….’

The Importance of Intention

The value of any action is judged by the intention behind it. Even permissible entertainment can be a positive act if it is intended to bring a family together or provide healthy relaxation, as long as it is balanced with remembrance and gratitude.

It is recorded in Sunan Nisai, 75, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

Actions are but by intention, and every man shall have only that which he intended.’

A Healthy Relationship with Media

By framing balance in a positive light, making uplifting content enjoyable, and weaving it into the family’s weekly rhythm, parents can help their children build a healthy relationship with media. This teaches them over time that while entertainment can bring temporary joy, spiritual content brings lasting peace, barakah, and true benefit.
