How can I use Quranic stories to show my children how both genders contributed to faith?

Parenting Perspective

The Quran is far more than just a book of commands; it is a rich book of character and transformative narratives. Its stories teach profound courage, unwavering patience, deep faith, and ultimate sacrifice, showcasing these virtues through the lives of both men and women. Yet, many children grow up primarily hearing about the male prophets and heroes, and they may unconsciously assume that true faith and leadership belong mostly to men. To consciously nurture a balanced understanding, parents must deliberately use Quranic stories to show clearly that women too were central to the unfolding of divine history: they were vital thinkers, steadfast believers, nurturers, and reformers whose personal strength and devotion dramatically changed the world.

By thoughtfully teaching your children that both genders are consistently celebrated and honoured in the noble Quran, you help them internalise the truth that contribution in faith is measured by sincerity, not by gender. This crucial understanding fosters genuine mutual respect, strong moral confidence, and deep gratitude for the essential diversity in Allah Almighty’s creation.

Beginning by Framing the Quran as a Mirror for All

Explain sincerely to your children that the Quran purposefully speaks to all hearts, never just to genders. Every single story, whether it is about a mighty prophet or a humble believer, holds essential lessons for both boys and girls. Say, ‘Allah Almighty tells us stories about strong men and equally strong women, so that we all can learn exactly how to be closer to Him.’

This essential perspective helps them clearly see that faith is universal: its core virtues are never confined by gender. Qualities like courage, mercy, patience, and trust are shared, non negotiable responsibilities of every believer.

Highlighting Male and Female Role Models Together

When you actively tell Quranic stories, consciously pair the examples of men and women to show them clearly that both played absolutely vital roles in effectively serving Allah’s mission.

  • Tell your children about Prophet Musa (peace be upon him), whose evident strength and leadership freed an entire nation, and immediately follow that with the story of his mother, who demonstrated profound trust in Allah Almighty as she placed him in the river. Explain how his sister then followed him quietly and intelligently, actively ensuring his eventual safety. Their collective story clearly shows that Allah’s plan succeeds through both courage and care, through leadership and support working in tandem.
  • Share the inspiring story of Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him), whose unwavering faith was beautifully matched by Hajar’s relentless endurance in the barren desert, running actively between Safa and Marwah in desperate search of life giving water. This act of determination was so beloved to Allah Almighty that it was permanently established as an integral part of the Hajj rituals.
  • Tell them about Maryam (peace be upon her), who stood firm in her intense devotion and purity, and Prophet Zakariyya (peace be upon him), who earnestly prayed for a child who would possess her sincerity. And be sure to share how Asiya (R.A), the wife of Pharaoh, bravely defied the Pharaoh’s oppression with a spiritual faith as powerful as any prophet’s courage.

Through these combined narratives, your children quickly learn that men and women are true partners in righteousness, with each gender reflecting a different, but equally necessary, facet of divine wisdom.

Focusing on Virtues, Not Roles

Instead of presenting these stories merely as ‘men lead, women support,’ purposefully focus on the specific qualities that Allah Almighty consistently praises: trust, perseverance, humility, and courage. When you tell any story, pause briefly to ask, ‘What specific quality do you think Allah Almighty loved most about this person’s actions and heart?‘

This practice intentionally trains children to look far beyond simple gender roles and to focus on the essential moral essence of faith. They begin to see clearly that the specific qualities Allah Almighty most values are entirely accessible to everyone who sincerely strives with dedication.

Relating Stories to Their Daily Lives

Help your children consciously connect the high virtues found in these stories to their own everyday behaviour. If they express being anxious or worried, gently remind them of Maryam’s peace when she resolutely turned to Allah Almighty for protection. If they show excessive pride, recall Qarun’s downfall due to his destructive arrogance. If they feel overlooked or ignored, tell them that even a baby, Prophet Isa (peace be upon him), miraculously spoke by Allah’s permission to forcefully defend his mother’s honour and dignity.

When Quranic lessons successfully touch and address their real, relatable emotions, they immediately become strong anchors of identity and invaluable guidance.

Encouraging Reflection, Not Comparison

After effectively sharing a story, sincerely invite your children to reflect deeply on what they personally learned, rather than simply comparing the fictional characters. Ask questions such as, ‘How can we show the same unwavering faith as Prophet Yusuf?‘ or ‘How can we actively have the same courage and determination as Hajar demonstrated?‘ This positive approach directly replaces destructive competition with sincere inspiration and allows both sons and daughters to deeply appreciate how both men and women alike were historically honoured for the strength of their faith.

Spiritual Insight

The noble Quran presents a truly complete vision of humanity, one where both men and women are fundamentally equal in purpose and spiritual potential before Allah Almighty. Their interwoven stories powerfully show that devotion, not gender, ultimately defines true greatness. Both were severely tested, both were immensely honoured, and both were ultimately chosen as eternal examples for all believers to come.

Men and Women as Equal Partners in Faith

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah At Tawbah (9), Verse 71:

‘The believing men and believing women are allies of one another. They enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong, and establish prayer and give zakah and obey Allah Almighty and His Messenger. Those Allah Almighty will have mercy upon them. Indeed, Allah Almighty is Exalted in Might and Wise…‘

This verse beautifully and explicitly affirms that both men and women share one sacred mission: to diligently uphold faith and goodness together as partners. Teach your children that both genders were purposefully created to complement each other in dedicated service to Allah Almighty’s cause, primarily through profound compassion, practical wisdom, and balanced strength.

When children fully understand this principle, they immediately stop seeing gender distinction as division and begin to sincerely appreciate it as a necessary divine design for mutual cooperation.

Examples of Honour in the Sunnah

It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 3769, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said about Maryam and Asiya:

‘Many men attained perfection, but among women, none attained perfection except Maryam, the daughter of Imran, and Asiya, the wife of Pharaoh.‘

This Hadith clearly shows that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself explicitly acknowledged women who reached the absolute highest ranks of faith and spiritual achievement. It powerfully teaches that spiritual excellence is freely open to everyone who strives with profound sincerity, completely regardless of their gender.

When your children clearly hear that Maryam and Asiya are highly honoured and mentioned in the same esteemed way as the mighty prophets and righteous men, they will instantly understand that Allah Almighty’s true measure of greatness lies in sincere devotion, never in external status or gender.

By intentionally weaving these compelling Quranic stories into your daily conversations, you successfully build a worldview in your children where both men and women stand confidently side by side in faith. Encourage them consistently to sincerely admire character over superficial category: to genuinely respect a person not primarily for their designated role, but for their righteous, moral qualities.

Show your sons clearly that true strength always thoughtfully includes compassion, and show your daughters that true dignity always includes moral courage. Together, these balanced stories plant the crucial seeds of balance, where sincere admiration for one gender never, ever comes at the spiritual cost of the other.

Over time, your children will deeply learn that Islam does not divide believers into ‘greater’ and ‘lesser’ categories, but actively unites them as one cohesive community striving together toward the same single light. When they truly see the prophets and believing women as equal partners in devotion, they will naturally grow to see themselves brothers and sisters, sons and daughters as sincere partners too: equal in worth, distinct in role, and forever united in their divine purpose before Allah Almighty.
