Parenting Perspective
It is a common and quiet worry for many parents that when their child chooses to do the right thing, no one notices. There is a fear that our children may feel their honesty does not truly count unless it is met with applause or recognition. This sense of invisibility can be disheartening for both parent and child, yet it presents a rich and beautiful opportunity to cultivate a form of inner world resilience. This is the deep seated belief that what is unseen by people matters just as much, if not more, than what is seen. If you can help your child internalise the profound truth that honesty is its own reward, you are giving them a moral compass that will guide them with integrity far beyond the visible world of praise and worldly recognition. This is a gift of immense spiritual and emotional security.
Building a Habit of Small Truths
The foundation of a truthful character is built upon small, consistent choices made in everyday situations. Look for moments where your child has the opportunity to choose honesty over convenience, such as returning extra change given to them at a shop, admitting to a mistake they made in their homework, or telling you the truth about an item they accidentally broke. In these moments, it is vital to celebrate the act of honesty itself rather than focusing solely on the outcome. You might say, ‘It must have been difficult to tell me you lost that book. I am so proud of you for having the courage to tell the truth’. This response places the value on the moral step they took, not just on the practical result. This helps them to associate truthfulness with strength of character.
Linking Honesty to Inner Peace
After your child has made an honest choice, especially one that was difficult, it is helpful to guide them in a moment of quiet reflection. You can ask them gently, ‘What did it feel like in your heart when you chose to be honest, even though no one else would have known? Did you feel a sense of lightness or peace? Did you feel that you respected yourself more?’. These questions are not meant to be an interrogation but an invitation for them to connect with the internal rewards of integrity. This practice helps to build an intrinsic motivation for honesty, one that is rooted in a desire for inner tranquillity rather than a need for external validation. You could even create a ‘secret success’ journal in your home, a private space where your child can jot down times they acted with integrity when no one was watching. Reviewing these moments together can reinforce the deep personal value of their unseen good deeds.
The Power of a Parent’s Example
Children absorb the values they witness, learning far more from the quiet consistency of your actions than from any explicit instruction. It is therefore crucial that you model the behaviour you wish to see. Let your child observe you acting with honesty even when no one else is around. This could be as simple as acknowledging your own error in a conversation, making the effort to return an item you were not charged for, or speaking truthfully in small, everyday matters. Your child’s character is shaped by imitation, and your commitment to unseen integrity becomes the silent curriculum that teaches them its true worth. They learn from you that honesty is not a performance for others, but a state of being that brings dignity and self respect.
Addressing Doubts and Anxieties
It is natural for a child to question the purpose of their good deeds if they feel unnoticed. If your child asks, ‘What is the point if nobody saw me do the right thing?’, it is a chance for a meaningful dialogue. You might respond with a simple analogy: ‘Because your heart knows the truth, and that is what matters most. It is like planting a tree that you may never sit under, but one day, someone else will enjoy its shade. Your honesty builds that beautiful tree of character within you’. If your child is anxious that people only seem to notice their failures and not their integrity, you can offer reassurance: ‘I may not always know every single time you do the honest thing, but Allah Almighty always knows, and I am so proud of you because I trust the goodness of your heart’.
Spiritual Insight
Beyond the parenting strategies and heartfelt conversations, there lies the deeper spiritual nourishment that faith offers. Noble Quran and the example of holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ remind us that raising children is not only about shaping their external behaviour but about nurturing hearts that are ever mindful of Allah Almighty and that act with integrity even, and especially, in solitude. This awareness transforms the act of being honest from a social expectation into a profound act of worship.
The Unseen Honour Known by the Heart
Noble Quran directly commands believers to maintain a consciousness of Allah Almighty and to speak with truth and justice. This reminder urges us to act with integrity even when the eyes of the world are not upon us, reinforcing that our accountability is primarily to our Creator.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Ahzab (33), Verse 70:
‘O you who believe! Fear Allah Almighty and speak words of appropriate justice…’
This verse emphasises that every act of honesty, performed without an audience and without any commendation, is observed by Him and carries immense weight in His sight. It teaches us to orient our moral compass towards Him, knowing that His awareness is the only validation we truly need.
The Success That Allah Almighty Records
The prophetic tradition teaches us that honesty is not a static act but a continuous journey that shapes our ultimate destiny. It is a quality that is recorded and sealed by Allah Almighty Himself.
It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, 2607c, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘It is obligatory for you to tell the truth, for truth leads to virtue and virtue leads to Paradise, and the man who continues to speak the truth and endeavours to tell the truth is eventually recorded as truthful with Allah Almighty , and beware of telling of a lie for telling of a lie leads to obscenity and obscenity leads to Hell Fire, and the person who keeps telling lies and endeavours to tell a lie is recorded as a liar with Allah Almighty.’
This Hadith teaches us a profound lesson. Honesty is not measured only by what the world applauds, but by what is recorded by Allah Almighty.
Our inner consistency, our truthful words, and our unseen integrity are what define our status with Him. Success in His sight is infinitely greater and more lasting than any fleeting moment of human recognition or praise.
