How can I teach that following his example is about ethics, not imitation of a time?

Parenting Perspective

A common challenge when teaching the Seerah is helping a child distinguish between the timeless principles of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and the cultural practices of seventh-century Arabia. Children, in their sincerity, may believe that following the Sunnah means replicating the exact customs of the past. It is our role as parents to guide them towards a deeper understanding: that the true essence of following the Prophet ﷺ lies in embodying his sublime character and universal ethics, which transcend any specific time or place.

Distinguishing Principle from Practice

The first step is to clarify the difference between the underlying principle and its outward expression. Explain that the Prophet ﷺ was sent as a mercy to all worlds, and his core teachings were designed to be applicable in every era. His goal was to cultivate virtues like honesty, compassion, justice, and humility. While his clothing, food, and daily tools were a product of his environment, the values he demonstrated through them are eternal. We can teach that the principle of modesty is a timeless Sunnah, even if the specific style of clothing changes across cultures, while the principle of cleanliness is constant, whether one uses a miswak or a toothbrush.

Cultivating an Ethical Conscience

The ultimate aim is to shift your child’s focus from outward imitation to inward emulation. Encourage a reflective approach by frequently asking, ‘In this situation, what would be the most kind and just thing to do, following the Prophet’s ﷺ example?’ This question moves the Sunnah from being a set of historical customs to being a moral and ethical compass. It cultivates a conscience that seeks to please Allah by reflecting the Prophet’s ﷺ character. True adherence is not found in costume, but in a conscience that strives to be merciful, sincere, and just in every circumstance.

Spiritual Insight

The sacred texts themselves direct us to understand the Prophet’s ﷺ example as a timeless model of spiritual and ethical excellence, rather than a static historical portrait to be superficially copied. The divine wisdom in the Quran and Hadith consistently prioritises the internal state and moral conduct over mere external form. This distinction is the key to unlocking a living, breathing connection to the Sunnah for every generation.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Ahzab (33), Verse 21:

‘Indeed, in the Messenger of Allah you have an excellent example for whoever hopes for Allah and the Last Day and remembers Allah often…’

The term used here, ‘uswatun hasanah’ or ‘an excellent example’, refers to his entire being: his unwavering faith, his patience in adversity, his mercy towards others, and his constant remembrance of Allah. This divine praise is for his character, which is the eternal aspect of his guidance. The verse links following him to the ultimate goals of faith: hope in Allah and the Last Day. This teaches us that the purpose of his example is to purify our hearts and improve our moral standing, qualities that are timeless and essential for salvation, not to replicate the cultural context of his time.

It is recorded in Mishkaat Al Masaabih, Hadith 5770, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘God has sent me to perfect good qualities of character and to complete good deeds.’

This profound statement is the Prophet’s ﷺ own mission statement. It explicitly defines the very purpose of his prophethood not as the establishment of a particular culture, but as the perfection of timeless moral and ethical virtue (akhlaq). This Hadith teaches us that every story from his life, every teaching he imparted, and every law he established was ultimately aimed at this single goal: refining the human character to its most noble state. For a child, this is a powerful lesson. It shows them that to truly follow the Prophet ﷺ is to strive to be more honest, more patient, more compassionate, and more just. It is through this internal transformation of character that the Sunnah truly comes alive in every generation.
