Parenting Perspective
Teaching children about the proper use of cooking ingredients, like oil, is an important part of their education in health and safety. They may see reusing oil as a way to avoid waste, but it is crucial to explain that when oil is heated repeatedly, it breaks down and can become harmful. You can begin the conversation by validating their thinking: ‘It is a good thought to not want to be wasteful. When it comes to cooking oil, however, using it too many times can actually make our food unhealthy. Let us talk about why’. This approach respects their intention while gently correcting their understanding.
Explain Why Reused Oil Becomes Unhealthy
Help your child understand that the oil changes chemically each time it is used.
- ‘Every time we heat oil to cook, it changes a little bit. If we do this too many times, the oil can get filled with tiny burnt particles and harmful substances that are not good for our bodies’.
- ‘Cooking with old, reused oil can give our food a bad taste and, more importantly, can be bad for our hearts and tummies over time’.
A simple analogy can make the concept very clear.
- ‘Think of it like bathwater. The first person to use it is clean, but the water gets dirtier with each person who uses it. Eventually, it is no longer clean enough to use. Oil is similar; it gets less healthy each time we cook with it’.
Reinforce That Health is the Priority
Frame the choice to use fresh oil as a positive action for the family’s well-being.
- ‘Our health is the most precious thing we have, and one of the best ways to protect it is by eating food that is cooked in a healthy way. Using fresh oil is a big part of that’.
- ‘Even if it seems like we are using more oil, we are making a wise investment in our long-term health, which is far more valuable’.
Model Responsible Use of Ingredients
Your actions in the kitchen will be your child’s primary guide.
- ‘You will notice that after I use oil for frying, I dispose of it safely instead of keeping it for next time. I do this because I want to make sure our food is always as healthy as it can be’.
- By making this a consistent practice, you show them that this is the standard for healthy cooking in your home.
Teach How to Reduce Waste Safely
If your child is concerned about waste, teach them the balance between being economical and being safe.
- ‘It is excellent that you are thinking about not being wasteful. The best way to do that with oil is to only pour out as much as we really need in the first place’.
- ‘In some cases, if the oil has only been used once and is still very clean, we can strain it carefully and use it one more time. But we should never use it more than that’.
This teaches a nuanced and responsible approach that prioritises safety.
Spiritual Insight
In Islam, our health is viewed as a profound blessing and a trust (amanah) from Allah Almighty. We are guided to care for our bodies by consuming food that is clean, pure (tayyib), and beneficial. Avoiding harmful cooking practices, such as repeatedly reusing oil, is a direct application of the Islamic principle of preserving health.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verses 168:
‘O mankind consume from the Earth that which is lawful and pure (qualitative); and do not follow the footsteps of Satan; indeed, he is your blatant enemy.’
This verse encourages us to seek out what is ‘good’. This goodness is not just about the food being permissible (halal), but also about it being wholesome and safe. By teaching your child not to reuse oil to the point that it becomes harmful, you are ensuring the food you prepare remains truly ‘good’ and beneficial for the body.
It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 5199, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Your body has a right over you. Take care of it by eating and drinking in moderation and avoiding anything harmful to your health.’
This powerful Hadith confirms that our bodies have rights that we must fulfil, and a primary right is that we protect them from harm. Teaching your child to avoid food cooked in degraded, overused oil is a direct fulfilment of this right. It is a practical way of adhering to prophetic guidance and honouring the trust of health that Allah has given us.
By instilling these values, you are teaching your child that responsible choices in the kitchen are not just about physical health, but are also a reflection of their spiritual duty to care for the blessings Allah has bestowed upon them.
