Parenting Perspective
In a society that often places a greater emphasis on outcomes than on the motives that drive them, it can be a profound challenge to teach a child that what truly matters in the sight of Allah Almighty is why we act, not just what we achieve. The Islamic concept of sincere intention, or niyyah, is a transformative spiritual tool that turns ordinary, everyday deeds into beautiful and meaningful acts of worship. When children learn to begin everything they do with a sincere heart oriented towards their Creator, they grow into mindful and purposeful believers who can find spiritual significance even in the simplest of actions. This is the foundation of a life lived with constant awareness and a deep, abiding connection to the Divine.
Cultivating a Habit of Purposeful Inquiry
The journey of nurturing intention begins with gentle, reflective questions that encourage your child to look inward before they act. Instead of delivering formal moral lectures, use the natural rhythm of daily life to cultivate this habit. Before they begin a task, you can ask, ‘Why are we doing this?’ or, ‘Who are we hoping to please with this effort?’. When they sit down to study, you can frame the activity with a higher purpose by saying, ‘Let us study with the intention that we can use this knowledge one day to benefit others and to be grateful for the minds Allah Almighty has given us’. When it is time to clean their room, you can say, ‘We do this because cleanliness is a quality that Allah Almighty loves, and we want our space to be peaceful’. Consistently linking these small, mundane tasks to a noble intention helps them to see that every single act has the potential to become worship when it is performed for the right reason. This practice slowly builds a mind that naturally seeks purpose.
The Power of a Lived Example
A child will internalise the practice of making an intention when they see it consistently modelled by the people they love and admire. It is therefore vital that they witness your own practice of setting an intention. Before you begin your work for the day, start cooking a meal, or even before you leave the house, you can make your intention audible. A simple, quiet statement such as, ‘Bismillah, I am doing this now seeking the pleasure of Allah Almighty,’ is a powerful and living lesson in mindfulness. This brief but consistent act demonstrates that a sincere beginning gives purpose and blessing to every action. Over time, your child will naturally imitate this beautiful habit, coming to understand that a pure intention is what anchors an action and gives it its true weight and meaning. Your example becomes their most trusted guide.
Reframing Setbacks as Opportunities for Sincerity
Life is filled with moments when our best efforts do not lead to the results we had hoped for. These instances of frustration or failure are precious, teachable moments. When a task goes wrong or your child feels disheartened, you can remind them of the beautiful Islamic principle that Allah Almighty rewards sincerity even more than He rewards perfection. You could comfort them by saying, ‘Your effort in this mattered so much because your intention was good, and Allah Almighty loves that sincerity from you more than anything’. This compassionate approach teaches them to value their own integrity and the purity of their effort over the superficiality of appearance or the pressure of competition. It nurtures a resilient heart that finds its worth not in worldly success, but in the knowledge that its striving was seen and appreciated by the Creator.
Nurturing Empathy Through Sacred Narratives
Stories have a unique ability to bypass the analytical mind and speak directly to the heart, making their lessons deep and memorable. Share stories from the lives of the prophets and their noble companions that beautifully illustrate how a sincere intention can change the entire value of an action. You could tell them, for example, about a small deed of kindness that was done quietly and secretly for the sake of Allah Almighty, and how such an act can outweigh grand, public acts that are performed for the sake of praise from others. These sacred narratives nurture the qualities of empathy and humility, helping a child to understand the profound truth that Allah Almighty looks into the deepest corners of our hearts, not at the outward results of our actions.
Spiritual Insight
A true and sincere intention is the very soul of faith. Both noble Quran and the timeless teachings of holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ remind us that the purity of our heart has the power to transform even the most mundane of actions into profound acts of worship. Parents can nurture this awareness by helping their children to connect the practice of making an intention with a constant remembrance of their Lord, thereby sanctifying their entire day.
When Actions Become a Reflection of the Heart
Noble Quran reveals that sincerity, or ikhlas, is the absolute foundation of every act of worship. It teaches us that the ultimate worth of any deed lies not in its size or its visibility, but in the purity of the motive that inspired it.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Bayyinah (98), Verse 5:
‘And they were not commanded except to worship Allah Almighty, being sincere to Him in religion, inclining to truth, and to establish prayer and to give zakah. And that is the correct religion…’
Parents can use this verse to explain that Allah Almighty wants our hearts to be clean and pure, free from the desire to show off or to seek the praise of people. When a child learns to begin every action with the quiet, internal dedication of doing it ‘for Allah Almighty’, their entire day becomes a continuous and beautiful prayer. A sincere intention keeps the believer grounded in a state of humility, transforming their ordinary routines into meaningful expressions of their devotion.
The Prophetic Emphasis on the Value of Intention
The most foundational Hadith in many collections of prophetic traditions, often placed at the very beginning, is the one that establishes the primacy of intention. Its placement highlights that the intention is the starting point and the defining factor for every deed.
It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, 1, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Actions are but by intention, and every person will have only what they intended. So whoever emigrated for Allah Almighty and His Messenger, then his emigration was for Allah Almighty and His Messenger; and whoever emigrated for worldly gain or to marry a woman, then his emigration was for what he emigrated for.’
This profound Hadith teaches a revolutionary concept: that Allah Almighty measures our hearts before He measures our hands. Parents can use this teaching to help their children understand that sincerity has the power to elevate simple actions like showing kindness, studying diligently, or helping around the house into deeds that can earn an eternal reward. When parents and children make it a habit to start each day and each task with Bismillah and a conscious intention, they are aligning their will with the divine purpose. This practice brings clarity, focus, and a deep, abiding peace to all of their actions.
