Parenting Perspective
Empowerment is often presented to children today as the ability to do whatever they want to follow desires, assert independence, and demand rights. Yet, Islam offers a far deeper and more fulfilling definition: true empowerment is strength with purpose. It grows through sabr (patience) and responsibility the twin qualities that transform mere potential into spiritual maturity and freedom into faithfulness.
Teaching this profound lesson means helping your child see that self control, perseverance, and genuine accountability are not restrictions but constant sources of strength. Every time they practise patience in the face of hardship or faithfully fulfil their duties, they gain mastery over the self and that self mastery is the very essence of spiritual empowerment.
Begin With the Real Meaning of Strength
Start by clearly explaining that empowerment in Islam does not mean overpowering others or seeking to avoid struggle. You can say, ‘Strength means staying calm when it is hard, doing what is right even when no one is watching, and trusting Allah Almighty when life feels uncertain or challenging.’
- Show them that sabr is not passive waiting but actively enduring with hope the courage to keep doing good with unwavering hope in Allah Almighty’s greater plan.
- When children understand patience as strength, they begin to see life’s challenges as invaluable opportunities to grow.
Link Responsibility to Trust
Teach your child that being responsible is a clear mark of honour and dignity. Say, ‘Allah Almighty trusted you with choices, time, and abilities and He watches precisely how you use them.’ Responsibility transforms empowerment from mere self expression into true stewardship. It clearly teaches them that every privilege comes with an accompanying accountability.
- Encourage your child to view responsibility as a genuine badge of maturity. When they consistently complete tasks, keep promises, or care for others, sincerely acknowledge it by saying, ‘That is what real strength looks like you handled your duty with patience and care.’
Use Daily Moments to Teach Both
Practical lessons leave the deepest, most lasting impressions. When your child feels impatient or frustrated, help them to pause, take a breath, and reflect: ‘This is your perfect chance to practise sabr.’ When they forget a chore or delay homework, gently remind them, ‘Responsibility means doing what is needed even when you genuinely do not feel like doing it.’
- Gradually, they will instinctively link patience with inner power and responsibility with true respect.
- They will begin to understand that empowerment is not primarily about external control but about developing strong, moral character.
Teach the Partnership of Patience and Action
Remind your child that sabr does not mean inaction or giving up. Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his noble companions consistently combined deep patience with diligent, sustained effort. Say, ‘When you do your absolute best and then calmly trust Allah Almighty with the final results, that is sabr successfully combined with strength.’
- Encourage them to approach school, relationships, and struggles with this integrated mindset working hard, being patient, and trusting the unseen wisdom of Allah Almighty.
- Such spiritual resilience naturally nurtures a deep confidence that endures far beyond temporary, fleeting success.
Model Empowerment Through Restraint
Children learn far more from observing your composure than from merely hearing your verbal advice. When they see you respond calmly to frustration or faithfully fulfil obligations without complaint, they witness empowered patience in action.
- Talk openly about your own experiences of consciously choosing restraint or fulfilling a difficult responsibility despite fatigue.
- This helps them sincerely understand that real strength often looks quiet choosing discipline over indulgence, humility over pride, and perseverance over ease.
Spiritual Insight
The noble Quran and the teachings of holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ directly connect sabr and responsibility to spiritual empowerment. Both are widely seen as the primary paths through which believers gain Allah Almighty’s essential help, ultimate success, and profound inner peace. Leadership, maturity, and spiritual strength all reliably arise from those who patiently endure and faithfully fulfil their sacred duties.
Empowerment Through Patience
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Anfal (8), Verse 46:
‘And obey Allah Almighty and His Messenger, and do not dispute lest you lose courage and your strength depart; and be patient. Indeed, Allah Almighty is with the patient…’
This Ayat beautifully ties strength directly to unity, obedience, and sabr. Teach your child that patience is what protects courage. Without it, energy rapidly fades, and purpose dangerously weakens. When they consciously practise patience whether in study, friendship, or worship they gain Allah Almighty’s companionship and the calm assurance that He firmly stands with them. Explain that this divine companionship is empowerment of the highest spiritual kind the type that fuels both endurance and unshakeable faith.
It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 6114, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘The strong person is not the one who overcomes others by his strength, but the one who controls himself when angry.’
This Hadees clearly shows that true, lasting power lies in self mastery. Teach your child that patience and responsibility are not signs of weakness but clear signs of superior strength the ability to govern one’s strong emotions and faithfully honour one’s duties even in difficulty. When they practise restraint and responsibility, they move much closer to the prophetic model of strength one that is defined not by dominance, but by discipline and sincere devotion.
Remind your child that every single act of sabr refines the soul, and every faithfully fulfilled duty successfully builds trust with Allah Almighty. Encourage them to view challenges not as punishments but as a vital training ground for empowerment. Say, ‘When you wait with firm faith and act with sincere responsibility, Allah Almighty is shaping you into someone strong enough to carry His divine blessings.’ Encourage them to make du’a: ‘O Allah, grant me strength through patience and honour through fulfilling my trusts.’ In time, they will come to see that empowerment is not found in rebellion or self assertion, but in restraint guided by purpose.
